Having been involved with our two boys as they went through the ranks and became Eagle Scouts, I’ve been privileged to get to know many professionals and volunteers in this council. The Scouting progr...am has allowed me to also know many adult volunteers in other councils across the country. I can wholeheartedly say this is one of the finest councils in the nation. Their heart is in the right place: teaching young people to make moral and ethical decisions by instilling in them the values of the Scout oath and law. See More

As a former Scout I'm am truly disheartened and disappointed at the treatment of Webelo Scout Ames Mayfield for participating in a Civic event which THE TROOP organized. The Boy Scouts oath is "...to ...do my duty to God and country...". One of the major duties of any patriotic, American citizen is to question and to hold our representative leaders accountable for their actions and statements. For me, Ames was fulfilling this duty admirably, particularly given his young age. It is worth noting that Representative Vicki Marble was less than accurate in responding to Ames' question about her statements on African-American's health and diet.

In my mind, Ames Mayfield is a credit and great addition to the Boy Scouts. It is sad to see such an active, engaged, intelligent scout kicked out, particularly given the dwindling numbers of boys joining the Scouts these days.

That said, if the Scout have become politically partisan, and will suppressing any child's questioning mind, then I think Ames is better off getting out of the Scouts, and that the Scouts become part of a by-gone era.

As the mom of an Eagle Scout I am saddened that your council allows the censorship of scouts learning about demoncracy in the respectful manner Ames affected with the Senator. This isn’t what scouting... should be about. That leader projected his beliefs on that child. Freedom of speech still is one of our primary rights here and that child should know those politicians work for him. As well he was standing for the rights of the downtrodden- people he felt were being made less of, and those whom he felt he should protect. It sounds like he was being very much what scouting wants our young people to be. Censorship shouldn’t be part of leadership. See More

I am absolutely disgusted that Cub Scout Ames Mayfield was forced out of his Broomfield den for asking racist state Senator Vicki Marble respectful and appropriate questions about critical issues like... gun-related domestic violence. Shame on you for allowing this to happen, and for bringing this woman before the den in the first place. Given that there were no repercussions for another scout who asked Marble why people voted for President Obama just because he’s black, it’s clear Ames was removed because of a political agenda. I demand that you remove the den leader who made this decision from his position and reinstate Ames’ membership in the Broomfield den immediately. If you do not, I can assure you that you will be hearing a great deal more from me and other family/friends who I will share this story with. We will not allow you to stigmatize and traumatize this 11-year old boy in this manner without consequences. See More

I am a scout parent and I am saddened to see the poor example set by leadership in this council. Ames Mayfield prepared for and engaged in what should have been a great opportunity to learn about rep...resentative democracy and civics. He was inappropriately and excessively punished by his den leader for expressing a view that the den leader didn't agree with. What do you think Ames learned about civics in America from this?
If Ames' presentation and question was presented in a way that was disrespectful and not reflecting scouting principles, there could have been a number of ways to handle this, not the least of which is a leader who could prep the scouts before the meeting, review speeches, etc., and to debrief afterward.

Council needs to counsel this den leader. If he cannot reform, then HE should be the one removed, not Ames.

I guess Nazi State Senator Vicki Marble applied a little pressure to remove Ames Mayfield after he dared to ask why she would not support “common-sense gun laws.” and why she blamed black people for p...oor health and poverty because of all the chicken and barbecue they eat,”.

Apparently the Denver Area Council, Boy Scouts of America falls right in line with the goosestepping blackshirted Senator.

Way to go scouts leaders.

Civism and comunity involvment is what Scout is all about. Engaging with elected representative is an important part of an healthy society. You are kicking out a young kid who represents what Scout va...lues are. There is no point considering if you are Democrat, Replublican, pro or anti-gun laws, the point is to be able to engage in such discussion respectfully, which this young boy did. The whole Scoutism world is shaming you. See More

I appreciate the strong personal relationships I share with the professional staff of the Denver Area Council. From the bottom up or the top down I know I am respected as a volunteer member - even whe...n I am 'rocking the boat' and I value the friendships I have with so many of the staff.

We have a great council because of the teamwork between professionals & volunteers and without strong links on either side of this chain we would fail.

Thank you one and all for your dedication and endurance to help deliver a quality development opportunity to the youth of Denver and surrounding areas. ~ peace ~ d2

Ames Mayfield is the kind of young citizen any organization should be proud to have. He asked his representative a serious and very important question. Not only was he shushed by his scout leader, but... also removed? Shame on all of you. He should be reinstated to his troop and a new leader found. See More

I'm not surprised to see the nationalism/fascism here. Boys should be raised to think intelligently and question those who need to be questioned. Scouting should be about learning to survive and respe...ct the environments they hike through and becoming responsible adults. Not becoming silent purveyors of conservative doctrine. I say this as a preachers kid, a Choctaw descendant, and a survivor of sexual advances as an eleven year old by an assistant scout master in a troop in Manhattan Kansas in 1981. My classmate wasn't so lucky. He was sexually assaulted by this scout master. The scout leader got seven years in state prison. I also don't care for the cultural appropriation of Native American practices or language by the scouts. Thanks for sending the message that courageous scouts need not join. See More

I don't have a child in the Scouts. I have a daughter who would have done well in their new effort to bring girls into the Scouts. I was a Scout myself when I was younger.

The whole organization seem...s to be in a decline and free fall in recent years. Scount Ames Mayfield deserved better treatment from the grown den leader and clearly the Scouts need to do a better job of managing their leaders. See More

Looks to me like a whole lot of people copied and pasted information and they didn’t know the whole situation.

The DAC in my eyes, (Silver Palm-Eagle Scout from the DAC T373), is a top shelf organiza...tion. I’ve had a great long term relationships with Board Members, Troop Leaders, National Troop Leaders, International associates and many other organizations...all of these contacts know and can confirm that the Denver Area Council is extremely focused on the development of the Scouts and does what is in the best interests of their members.

Don’t believe everything you read on these reviews. If you have questions, private message me and I’ll pass along my experience.

Have a great day and do a good turn today!
