After bouncing around from major to major, I eventually found my home in the Communication Department. The professors I've had are interactive with their students and go above and beyond to make sure ...we excel in our courses. They also care about our futures enough to help us find beneficial, yet fun internships that will help us secure a job after graduation. I admire their willingness to work with students to ensure they graduate on time! The opportunities I've been provided with through the Comm family makes me proud to be a student at Drury University. Department of Communication Arts & Sciences at Penn State added 2 new photos.

David Maxson has been awarded the Alumni Association Dissertation Award by the Graduate School of Penn State. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in s...cholarship and professional accomplishment, and it is considered to be among the most prestigious available to Penn State graduate students.

Maxson’s dissertation, “Rhetorical Burials: Memorial Practices in New Orleans,” examines a range of memorializing practices in the city of New Orleans. His innovative study considers the ceremonial memorialization a long-forgotten jazz performer, victims of gun violence, a hurricane and its devastation, and the practice of white supremacy. At stake in the dissertation are the varied and lively rhetorical practices of memorialization, how those practices encounter the past, present, and future in order to re-animate or—in the case of the symbolic burials of Hurricane Katrina and white supremacy—lay to rest.

The dissertation, completed under the direction of Professor Debbie Hawhee, was successfully defended earlier this week. Congratulations Dr. Maxson!
