Women entrepreneurs have significantly increased their economic impact in the past few decades. Today, women business owners are the fastest growing segment of the economy. The numbers confirm that th...e full economic participation of women and their success in business is critical to the continued economic recovery and job growth in this country.
Economic development is the sustained, concerted actions of policy makers and communities that promote the standard of living and economic health of a specific area. Economic development can also be referred to as the quantitative and qualitative changes in the economy. Such acts can involve multiple areas including development of human capital, critical infrastructure, regional competitiveness, social inclusion, health, safety, literacy, and other initiatives. Economic development differs from economic growth. Whereas economic development is a policy intervention endeavor with aims of economic and social well-being of people, economic growth is a phenomenon of market productivity and rise in GDP. Consequently, as economist Amartya Sen points out, "economic growth is one aspect of the process of economic development."[1]

Mayor Eric Garcetti has set a goal of finding summer and year-round jobs for 15,000 youth through the 2016 HIRE LA’s Youth initiative. A starter job is key in helping young people ages 14 to 24 learn about the workplace, find a mentor and enter a path to meaningful and lifelong employment. A healthy economy starts at the ground floor - with a base of trained and capable workers. Through the HIRE LA’s Youth initiative, the City of L.A. partners with employers to help fill those positions. Youth are required to work at least 100 hours and receive workforce training before they arrive on the first day. Finding a first job is hard, especially for young people from neighborhoods that don’t have as much economic opportunity as others. There are thousands of motivated young job seekers in the City of Los Angeles who are hoping for a chance to work. With your partnership, we can help those youth make the transition to their first or second job, and possibly a career! To learn more go to http://hirelayouth.com
