What's the difference between an opinion and an insight? Journalism today is awash in the former yet so little of what's out there shows any original thinking. The bandwagon effect is especially noticeable in the coverage of Obama, who to his credit tries to keep a longer view and not get overwhelmed by the ups and downs, okay mostly downs, of the news cycles ....

Every president goes through rough patches, and the challenge is to look in command while all around you seems to be crumbling. Obama has the intellectual capacity and the stamina to persevere -- all that's missing is a greater appreciation for the theatrics of leadership, and when he meets with the families of those who died in that oil rig explosion in the Gulf, he'll meet that test, at least for the moment....

I'll be at the Kennedy Library in Boston this evening interviewing my colleague Jonathan Alter about his new book The Promise. It recounts the trials and tribulations of Obama's first year as President and what they portend for the future. Does anybody want to suggest a question for me to relay to him?
