Lived down the street in the late 60's and early '70's and return whenever I'm in south Florida. Beef and pork sandwiches on Bimini bread with conch fritters and chowder with sherry on the upstairs pa...tio in the winter is unbeatable. I miss Ernie's musings on the wall, the blue Marlin and wooden menus but still feels like home. See More

Oh my god I miss conch chowder and bahama bread. I need the recipe for Bahama bread so bad! I live in NW, MT now and am drooling at the prospect of finding a recipe for that bread. Conch is out of the... question, as I have never seen it here. See More

In the 70s, when "Dirty Ernie's", as it was popularly know, still had Ernie at the cash register, we loved this place. The food was outstanding. Our favorite waitress (they had not been renamed the PC... "servers" at that time), whose name unfortunately escapes me, was a trip. My companion on one trip asked he if they ever washed the windows. Her classic response, "Hell, no, honey. We remodel." Today's Erinei's is a whole lot cleaner than the 70s version. With Ernie's philosophy painted on the walls. A favorite stop on the way home after going to Dania Beach, now a state park. It was a lot more fun back then. The beach, that is. Ernie's was always fun. <wink> See More

Ernie's barbecue has been around for decades. When I lived in Fort Lauderdale I actually worked there on and off over the years. The food is excellent. The Bimini bread makes a fabulous sandwich! The ...secret recipe barbecue sauce and conch chowder are miles above any I've ever had before. The prices are reasonable, the portions are more than fair, and the ambience is unique. I love Ernie's, and while it's not the same place it was decades ago ( Dirty Ernies) it's still really good food. Whenever we go back down to Fort Lauderdale, we always go to Ernie's after the beach. I always get a barbecue beef sandwich, and you've got to try the conch fritters! Yum! See More

I loved the BBQ Sandwiches they were to die for. I would buy the sauce and use it in my Omelets. I'm going to miss it a lot. I would really love to have the BBQ SAUCE RECIPE. Anyone who has worked th...ere and has it pass it on since we no longer have the Restaurant we might as well enjoy something from it. The Conch recipes as well let the food live on. See More

My husband and I were staying in the area for a week and Ernies was across the street so we decided to try it. Not sure what the deal with the elderly gentleman tending bar was but to say lack of per...sonality is close. My husband asked what kind of IPA's they had and his response was Goose Island, ok I guess that was the selection, no big deal, we asked him what he would recommend on the menu, his response was pork. We stand our beers and left. Won't be bothered returning the next time we are in town. See More

When I lived in FLL in the early 70s-80s, it was one of my all-time favorite places. We lovingly called it "Dirty Ernie's".
After moving away, and returning in the mid 90s, I insisted on bringing a f...riend there, bragging about the politically/socially themed wall paintings and rustic setting. What we walked into was closer to run-of-the-mill than avant-garde... a real pity.
The pork sandwiches and conch fritters helped sooth my disappointment (and embarrassment, though the portions were not as huge as I had gushed about.
Later that week, we went to Cap's in Lighthouse Point for excellent seafood in a still-rustic setting.

Had the rib dinner. Enormous and swimming in really good BBQ sauce. Came with two thick slices of Bimini bread (a bit like brioche only not as sweet) a giant corn on the cob that was really tender a...nd coleslaw. Fries are extra, but absolutely not needed. Ribs excellent ... meat just fell off the bone. Definitely a return visit next trip See More

Just had a pork sandwich. The bread is amazing, pork was super tender, not pulled like I expected by sliced, and the sauce, I can't believe how fantastic it was. It is not a traditional sauce but the... flavor is something else. I am very satisfied. See More

Eating @ Ernie's since I was 16. 41 years. The bathrooms and general overall look, feel gave it the Dirty Ernie's name. I'm not very local so it's a treat now. The political signs are gone, prices wen...t up but, the new (7year) owners kept the recipes. We had the Conch Chowder with some sweet Sherry, Conch Salad, Pork Sandwiches on the sweet Bimini Style bread. I love their BBQ Sauce. Service was one person so a little busy. Worth trying if you like this food. Wished I was closer... See More
