Absolutely amazing! Talk to the owner. He stopped by our table several times and had us try a bite of the special and the roast pork they make. We both had pastrami sandwiches that were better than wh...at we experienced in New York. See More

Today, my husband and I made the drive from our home in historic Old Towne Portsmouth for a lunch at Chow, afterwards we had a sweet tooth and while in the area decided to drive over to the bakery ...... it was our first time but I've seen it many times and always wanted to stop in. It is very outdated and dingy, the food/bakery items weren't fresh, in fact when we asked to purchase a donut the owner said "they were from yesterday so he didn't want to sell them to us" ... he cut a slice and we both tried it, hesitant and as not to offend him we accepted. I spotted a large chocolate cake that looked as good as it could have gotten in there, and since we stopped in just before closing we wanted to at least purchase a little something. The SLICE of cake was $10!!!! I cringed, I mean with the flies inside the case and dirty countertops, things stacked everywhere and messy I really thought $5 at best. The cake was good though, we quickly ate it and made our way out after thanking the man. As the daughter of a French German immigrant, I was saddened to see the label of a French bakery on this place ... a good French bakery is at the very least charming and a very alluring place, filled with crunchy baguettes, buttery viennoiseries and decadent pastries. It was an experience we can say "at least we tried" but I can say we won't be going back :/ See More

The best Chicken Salad sandwich on the planet! Been going to French Bakery for 20 years and never disappointed. The bread is excellent! The spices in the Chicken Salad gets five stars. The pastries a...re unbelievably delicious. We live in Oregon and come back every year to visit family and stop at the French Bakery. The price is worth the quality of the food. Enjoy!!! See More

I've been told by many friends that I had to go try the pastrami sandwich at the French Bakery while I was in Norfolk working. We finally had some spare time to stop in and grab a bite. All I can say ...is, it was the best pastrami sandwich ever. Thanks George for the great food and sitting and talking with us while we stuffed our face. See More

Get the pastrami sandwich. Just do it. If you're alone, order half. If you're with a friend, you might be able to finish a whole one.

The very best pastrami sandwich anywhere. Eclairs are out of this world. Fig perserves delish. What more can I say? Started going there to eat back in the '60's.
