Nothing makes us happier than seeing one of our shy kitties blossom. Hannes came in marked as a feral but once we were able to interact with him we realized he wasn't feral, he just wasn't sure about people yet. Lots of love and attention and he's gone from hiding under the cat tree to sitting on top asking to be noticed!

Check out this little fashionista! Gertie is an eight year old chihuahua who would prefer cuddle time to play time. You can visit this li’l sweetie at our West Des Moines location.

Charlie is our obedience superstar - check out how much fun he's having showing off his skills! This gorgeous chocolate boy is 3 years old and he's got energy to burn - he'd love to be your running or walking buddy. While he loves his people he's picky about his 4 legged friends - he generally does best with larger dogs who enjoy his energetic play style. If you're interested in meeting Charlie stop by our West Des Moines location and our staff can help you decide if he's the right fit for your family.

I absolutely loved our experience in choosing our forever furr baby at the downtown DSM location. The lady who helped us was very knowledgeable and happy to help us find a kitty that fit our household.... She wanted to be sure it would work well for the kitty as well as us. She genuinely cared about the results and I felt confident in bringing our Ollie (Almond) home. We had our check up and he got fantastic review from the vet. He was well cared for in his time at the shelter, and that means a lot to me as well. I would recommend furry friends refuge to all of my family, friends, or anyone who is looking! See More

I was there to give my "best buddy" to Furry Friends Refuge so they will hopefully find him a new "home." I went through the process and it was what I have needed to do. I love him too much to keep... him from having a "forever home" with a yard and having the adventure that his life used to be. The kind workers at Furry Friends let me know they would do their best to find a good "forever home" for my "best buddy." When I left him this wonderful lady was giving him his bowl of water and I was able to sneak out. I don't want him to miss me, I want him to have fun, meeting new people and have a "forever home" and I hope his new owner(s), his "mom and/or dad", will love him. Who ever you are, I thank you with all my heart!! See More

I adopted Bear last week. VERY happy. I love this shelter, I love that they are no kill, and I love that they adopt out their sponsored pets at no charge, and even the one's that are not sponsored only $75. I will definitely be back to add another furry friend to the family........we've got our eyes on Fanta! I would highly recommend Furry Friends to anyone looking to adopt a pet! See More

We adopted our beautiful cat here in December! We had lost our loving cat of almost 17 years to sickness and were very sad. I was told about this rescue and we went just to look for fun since we were ...missing our cat. We ended finding the perfect cat for us and were able to give her a forever home. It helped fill a space we were missing and she is perfect! Great place to work with! See More

We adopted Baby, our newest member of the family, a week ago from Furry Friends. Everyone we interacted with was so pleasant and helpful! You can tell that they love and care about all of the animals ...that come through their door. Baby has done amazing adjusting to her new home (and her new brother) and we are so happy that we decided to visit Furry Friends!! See More

The WDM location was very helpful with us. Our oldest cat crossed the rainbow bridge in June. Her sister was as sad as we were. They suggested a little blond kitten that was so lovable. We bonded imme...diately and brought her home that day. She has been a blessing to our family. Wonderful clean and welcoming place with people who really care! See More

Great experience with the adoption process. Staff was friendly and worked as quickly as she could to assist everyone waiting to adopt. The kitten I adopted came from hurricane Harvey and FF had all hi...s paperwork and vet records from Houston which they gave to me. I've also had 4 cats spayed at FF. Would highly recommend them! My husband and I decided to adopt an older set of cats, and found Bella and Fleetwood (formerly Flower and Hank), who had been together for most of their lives, and whose owner decided to relinquish t...hem at ages 8 and 6. It took some time to build trust, especially with Bella, but it was worth the wait! We've had them a little over a year and a half now, and can't imagine our lives without them! See More

We adopted our two cats Chloe and Bear (previously Chantelle and Aladdin) just over a month ago and couldn’t be happier! The volunteers were incredibly helpful and made the adoption process easy. We g...ot the two friendliest, cuddliest cats I’ve ever met and they are nothing short of spoiled. Thank you so much for doing what you do FFR! See More

I adore Furry Friends. I encourage everyone I know, and even strangers, to both volunteer and adopt from them. I've done both myself. I adopted my amazing cat Merlot from them back in April. I'm so pr...oud to support my local no-kill shelter and all the work they do. See More

When our baby Pie was suffering from heart failure, we decided to adopt a new cat, both to keep her company and to ease the inevitable pain from her passing. I didn't know what I was getting into when... we went to Furry Friends, but after a few visits and some hmm-ing and haw-ing, we managed to walk out with the best cat I've ever had. A headbump sealed the deal, and our Sumi (formerly Princess Buttercup/Cuddles) has been headbumping ever since. She sleeps on my head, begs to be snuggled (despite apparently not liking to be held before), smiles, purrs, and generally is just the sweetest cat in the world. I could not have asked for a better experience at Furry Friends. All of the workers were helpful and conscientious in listening to our worries and needs, they very carefully considered what we had to say and gave great suggestions. We will be making regular donations for as long as we can. Nothing will manage to pay you guys back for giving us Sumi. See More

They take care of thier animals and want the best for them. They are very professional in communicating all there is to know about the animal you are adopting. I hope to not disappoint them and have t...o return the dog I adopted over the weekend. It wouldn't be thier fault and it is certainly not the animals fault. The blame would be on me.
My dog of 18 years died a month ago. There will never be another Roscoe. I felt I needed to adopt a shelter dog for both my needs and the dogs. I met Jett and liked him a lot. I knew that he had some resource guarding issues. Hes super active which fit my lifestyle well. I kept seeing us running 5ks, paddleboarding and canoeing and going for long powerwalks. What Im not sure about is how he is going to do when I go back to work in a few days. I was told hes crate aggressive so crating is out. Ill only know if he is going to be destructive while Im away later. I know they would take him back, but I really hope to avoid that. Im hoping for the best. He has been in the shelter for 5 months and is only 13 months old. He has never had tbe chance to bond with someone or excpet for the shelter staff......probably was not trained correctly either. I need to be paitent and hope he forms that bond. The next 7 days will say alot.

Sure wish the thousands of animals they have rescued could post. This is an animal rescue. They save lives.
They are a busy bustling staff, who care for the maximum amount of animals they can save. A...lways at max capacity with a wait list. What's not good about that? Their mission is honorable. An animals life shouldn't have an expiration date. They understand that. Expect to see a busy and engaged staff, clean environment and mission minded people. It wouldn't be an unreasonable expectation after just a single day of seeing animals dumped, surrendered or turned in, neglected, lost and abandoned. That you wold begin to love the animals a little more. And have less tolerance for the humans. But regardless the mission doesn't change. And the mission is their focus. Love this place! They give the animals a voice. They give the animals a chance. They take in FIV positive animals as well. They save lives. They are selfless and the only one allowed to be selfish here are the animals! And believe it or not-the humans bite more often than an animal. Humans cruel and vindictive-animals are not. Animals have no ulterior motives they simply want love. See More
