The great number of times I have been in this store since I've lived in johnstown, I haven't once had a pleasant experience. It smells awful, which I get that there are live animals and that they prod...uce odor, but its usually completely awful. Around easter promoting rabbits to be sold as easter gifts with no actual insight as to how to properly take care of them or that they are a 10 year commitment??? And the 5 or 6 babies in a very small area, no food and no water both times I was in around easter? Bunnies need hay at all times. Ridiculous and disgusting. Prices are kinda crazy, at least at the items I had looked at. I keep trying to support the local business but I just can't do it. Staff is rude usually too, if not completely absent. See More

Not only are they the only pet store in this part of town,,their the BEST pet store from here to New York! Well worth the drive from wherever you are! They have the best selection of fish!! Tropical S...alt Water! They have just about any pets besides puppies! Usually always kittens, guinea pigs, and bunnies! The service is always on top and always with a smile! If you don't leave there with a smile on your face there's something wrong with YOU! Go check them out! I'm almost sure you'll leave with a pet lol See More

This store smells like none of the cages have been cleaned since they opened and it's not bc it's a pet store, I've been in smaller pet stores with less smell from the same caged animals. They're over... priced for any type of reptile lighting. None of the reptiles had lights on at noon, most reptiles require 12-14 hours of uvb there's no way they're getting that if the lights aren't plugged in until the people working "feel like getting to it". I'm actually sorry I walked into this store. See More

Visited yesterday and today. Though i walked past several employees not one acknowleged me. I was in the store for 20 min up and down aisles trying to find what I needed and couldnt. I noticed male cu...stomers were acknowledged right away (all male employees when i was there.) Went back today determined to find what I needed. Again i was never acknowledged and male customers got greeting and help. I finally got frustrated and asked an employee i got a eye roll and finger point and he went back to his stool he was sitting on. I was looking through and i was never once asked if i needed help. I paid for my items and left. Id rather shop small business but Ive had much better experiences at Petco. Never felt so out of place in a pet store before See More

I will return for my pet needs! I drove to Altoona and visited both Petcos determined to find my daughter a pet rat. They didn't have any but tried to sell me supplies for our future pet that went wel...l over $200. We decided to make the trip to Johnstown after calling Gittler's and getting confirmation that they had rats. The woman who helped us was lovely! We got what we needed and it was reasonably priced.. well under $100 including the female rat we got. We are very thankful for being able to experience the kindness and knowledge this particular business has. See More

Ran in as they were closing. I'm making shelter for neighbor strays for the winter. The owner was so nice and gave me the styrofoam boxes that I needed. Thank you again! I have been a loyal customer for YEARS!

I have no complaints about Gittlers. They are reasonably priced and pleasant to deal with ,also... returns are not a hassle. I would much rather give my business to a local family owned store instead ...of a place like Petco ( which is way over priced and was once cited by Peta for inhumane conditions). I even trusted them to keep my tortoise for a week while i went on vacation. I highly recommend Gittlers for all your pet needs. See More

I've been going to gittlers my whole life, sometimes just to see the animals for no reason, cause I love animals. I've never had a bad experience with this place. The owner or any of the workers were ...never rude to me or anybody that went in with me. They always answered any questions we had, and they do a great job at their work. Animals are healthy and beautiful, and this place is great and reliable. See More

I happen to love Gittler's, I have been a customer of theirs since they've taken over! Marie is fantastic, and has never steered me wrong about any animal! Tim is great! I bought just about every smal...l animal I have from them, from budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels, guinea pigs, kittens to lizards! They breed a good many of their animals, so you know where they come from. Their staff is quite knowledgeable. I cannot say enough good things about them! They come HIGHLY recommended! See More

Gittlers is one of the most disgusting, disrespectful places I've ever been to. Disrespectful both in the owner's interactions with customers, and disrespectful to the animals.

I am a younger woman,... and I look young. And when I walk into a place of business, I expect NOTHING less than honesty and respect as a customer, if nothing less, as a person. I don't understand how people can treat another human so rudely.

2/3 of the animals in that store are sick, they are disgusting and dirty. I saw a rabbit with mites, a Guinea pig with a skin infection, and a very malnourished bird. The back room full of animals is filled with overstocked and disgustingly overloaded cages of animals, who can not be enjoying their life. I doubt Gittlers has a healthy choice of where they get kittens and bunnies, and all their birds. They offer feeder rats, and although feeder animals, they deserve respect, which they obviously aren't being given.

On top of having a male iguana, an adult nearly 3 feet long, in a cage no bigger than a 30 gallon (meaning he couldn't move. The tank was as long as he was.), leopard geckos stocked away in cubicle styled cages, they had crested geckos stashed away in the bottom of a shelf.

The handlers were extremely rough with the geckos, and I was lied to. I ended up purchasing a gecko against my moral code, and I couldn't help myself. He wasn't cared for and was clearly being bullied. The geckos were held in a tank with babies who were nearly 3 months old. I am not an uneducated individual, and so I knew this baby was NOT three months old.

There were two dates on the tank, and the date that clearly was correct for the baby I ended up purchasing was May 21st. I bought my gecko on the 25th. Being housed with geckos born in March. The two babies who were smaller, obviously hatched on the 21st, were tailless. Clearly a sign of being bullied, if, as the owner said, the baby was hatched in store and raised by hand, there's no reason he shouldn't have his tail, except for being bullied.

After a mildly ignorant comment made by the owner on my way out of the store, I now have a gorgeous and friendly gecko. Which is due to being perfectly healthy and handled and in a proper enclosure. UVB lights are not necessary and I'm glad he's not blind by now. I pity the other geckos I couldn't take home, and I am so sorry for anyone who supports this business and the owners. They are disrespectful and disgusting. A shame and a dishonor to any and all animals.

Have been purchasing dog products for years and if they don't have something specific that you need, happy to order it for you. Very reasonably priced, too.
