Working as an ALT in Japan is an immersive experience that can reward you with an understanding of the people and cultural nuances that most visitors to the country aren't privileged to. Such immersion will only naturally improve your understanding of the language too. The teachers are all kind and respectful, and the students are always fun to be around. There's a lot to gain from being an ALT, and I very much recommend it.
(Ibaraki ALT, JB)

You can really use your creativity in this work when you’re planning the lessons, and trying to make them as fun as possible. In my small town all the students know me and are really interested in me. Plus, the students are really cute! (Tochigi ALT, CS)

The best moment of being an ALT is when you explain a difficult concept to students and see their faces light up when they understand it.(Ibaraki ALT, CM)

A ticket from England to Japan=$ 700
Teaching English in Japan=
$ 2,000 + no less than 1.000 extra with privet lessons.
Teaching CHILDREN in Japan = PRICELESS
SO, if you have a chance, please come to this MAGIC country....
(Ibaraki ALT, AP)

When I first became an ALT, I did it just because I wanted to come to Japan. After I started working, I realized that I really like the work. The students, the schools, and the teachers are all really great. I live in the countryside where everyone is really nice.(Ibaraki ALT, BT)

A lot of fun - the more effort you make, the more fun the work will be. You can immediately see a change in the students’ behavior when you increase your effort.(Gunma ALT, AH)

A Happy New Year!!!
Best wishes for a successful and rewarding year.

I look forward to your continued good will in the coming year.

Current ALT Comments

In Japan they don't have many chances to speak with native speakers. It is a good opportunity for them to have access to one at school. Since we are part of a public school, all children get to meet us. We can also work with the Japanese teachers to help the children learn English. (Ibaraki ALT, MM)

Teaching in Japan has been a really good experience for me. I learned a lot about myself and the world in general. I think for anyone who is willing to give it chance, they will really enjoy themselves.(Ibaraki ALT, S.M.)

Being an ALT in Japan isn’t just being a teacher’s assistant. Being an ALT is about making the children enjoy studying a foreign language and having fun in the classes, all the while living in a country completely different from yours, meeting new people and exploring new places. The work is extremely rewarding. (Ibaraki ALT, J.V.)
