Today marks the reveal of the memorial statue of Mary Seacole in the garden of St Thomas’ Hospital, London, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament. Although lesser known than Florence Nightingale, Mary was a pioneer in nursing techniques and administered her own treatments to soldiers during the Crimean War. As a Jamaican national, she faced a degree of racial prejudice and was sadly forgotten for almost a century.
Today marks a pivotal moment in the history of Britain and its relationship with Europe. Today sees the public of Britain able to vote to either leave or remain in the EU. Being British ourselves, it is an issue close to the History Learning Site's heart and one that seems a complicated choice for most voters.

150 years ago today, on 7 June 1866, Elizabeth Garrett and Emily Wilding Davison went to Parliament to present a petition through John Stuart Mills calling for women to have the right to vote. A work of art has been commissioned for permanent display in Parliament and there is a petition for a statue of Millicent Fawcett to be erected in Parliament Square because of her constitutional efforts to gain the vote for women. On the 6th June 1944, the biggest sea-based naval strike in history occurred off the coast of Normandy, commonly known as D-day. Let us not forget the thousands... of brave men of many nationalities who lost their lives in the battle that day.
