Today I filed SB982 to require that a presidential candidate in Illinois must release five years of tax returns.
On one level, this is basic transparency: voter...s should have as much financial information as possible about their options. After all, President Trump ran for office in large part by boasting about his business prowess, but without releasing his tax returns, he never gave us the opportunity to check up on that record.
But the issue goes beyond simply enabling voters to make an informed choice. In a frightening article about the financial conflicts of interest that are swirling around President Trump, the New York Times also explains that "the true extent of Mr. Trump’s global financial entanglements is unclear, since he has refused to release his tax returns and has not made public a list of his lenders."
In other words, without seeing President Trump's tax returns, we can't even figure out what conflicts of interest may be out there.
This situation is dangerous and it is wrong. SB982 would fix it -- I hope you'll ask your state legislators to support this bill.
