SPRINGFIELD – The Rauner Administration issued the following statement from General Counsel Dennis Murashko in response to a St. Clair County judge denying the Attorney General’s motion to block state employee pay.

“We’re pleased our hard working state employees, who show up to work every day on behalf of the people of Illinois, will continue to be paid. It is our hope the Attorney General drops this lawsuit so the bipartisan negotiations in the Senate can continue in order to reach a balanced budget with changes to get our state back on track.”

Today I filed SB982 to require that a presidential candidate in Illinois must release five years of tax returns.

On one level, this is basic transparency: voter...s should have as much financial information as possible about their options. After all, President Trump ran for office in large part by boasting about his business prowess, but without releasing his tax returns, he never gave us the opportunity to check up on that record.

But the issue goes beyond simply enabling voters to make an informed choice. In a frightening article about the financial conflicts of interest that are swirling around President Trump, the New York Times also explains that "the true extent of Mr. Trump’s global financial entanglements is unclear, since he has refused to release his tax returns and has not made public a list of his lenders."

In other words, without seeing President Trump's tax returns, we can't even figure out what conflicts of interest may be out there.

This situation is dangerous and it is wrong. SB982 would fix it -- I hope you'll ask your state legislators to support this bill.

We had a great round table discussion with Belleville West students about the Lead Higher Initiative. Illinois is one of the first states participating in this ...program to help more students enroll in AP and IB classes. The program will help us reach more students and make sure they are better prepared for college.
