Iowa State Cross Country / Track and Field

CYCLONES 101 - SNOW, SMALLPOX and the FIRST DRAKE TITLE

Iowa State head coach Ned Merriam thought he'd have a good four-mile relay team as the Cyclones got read...y for the 1918 Relays. Iowa State (known to many Iowans as "Ames", hence the name on the uniforms) had won the Missouri Valley Conference and then the Big Nine (Big Ten) team crown when invited to compete the previous fall.

Nothing goes according to plan. One of Iowa State's first great runners was Arlin Hawthorne. The Spencer native had won both the MVC and Big Nine individual cross country titles the previous fall. But he would face a life-threatening challenge before retaking the track for the 1918 Drake meet.

Iowa State 11-time All-American jumper Jhoa Luque was honored with the Eye of the Storm Award at last week's Scholar-Athlete Banquet. A woman who came to ISU to earn a college degree in her second language has already conquered that challenge, earning a bachelor's degree in marketing. In May, she will be awarded a second undergraduate degree in international business. Now she is taking classes in a third language, French.

The 2,500-mile journey from Venezuela to Ames has paid major dividends for Luque and for all of us, who have learned by being around her. Dani Orris and Tom Kroeschell put this together for the banquet to tell her story.
