WEIGHT vs. HAMMER

The weight and hammer throwers may do more work for less attention than any other event performers in track and field. Part of it is that their events require secure areas of competition which means they often are held separately from when their teammates are showcasing their skills.

But the weight and hammer throw are special events with considerable technique demands. Iowa State's Vlad Pavlenko had the second best throw in school history earlier this seas...on. He and his teammates will compete Friday in the Big 12 Track and Field Championships at the Lied Center in Ames. The women's 20-pound weight throw is at 3 p.m. The men's 35-pound weight throw will start at 6 p.m.

But even as the indoor season comes to a climax, these Cyclones have not neglected their hammer training, even in February.
