MEET DAY! The Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships begin today in Ames. Multi-events start at 3 PM, field events and track prelims start at 3 PM.
WEIGHT vs. HAMMER
The weight and hammer throwers may do more work for less attention than any other event performers in track and field. Part of it is that their events require secure areas of competition which means they often are held separately from when their teammates are showcasing their skills.
But the weight and hammer throw are special events with considerable technique demands. Iowa State's Vlad Pavlenko had the second best throw in school history earlier this seas...on. He and his teammates will compete Friday in the Big 12 Track and Field Championships at the Lied Center in Ames. The women's 20-pound weight throw is at 3 p.m. The men's 35-pound weight throw will start at 6 p.m.
But even as the indoor season comes to a climax, these Cyclones have not neglected their hammer training, even in February.

DAN CURTS MAKING TRACKS
Iowa State junior Dan Curts was one of the first Cyclone recruits who came to ISU under director of track and field Martin Smith. He had an auspicious start, making the NCAA Cross Country Championships as a true freshman. The Ellsworth, Maine native has demonstrated continued improvement and is closing in on the four-minute mile plateau after another PR in the event Saturday at the ISU Classic in Ames.
CLASSIC WEEKEND PRODUCED BIG ISU PERFORMANCES
It is hard to know where to start. The 2018 ISU Classic has literally changed the national fabric of how teams plan to qualify their athletes for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. For Iowa State, it was a big weekend for Anne Frisbie, who became the fifth Cyclone women to run 5,000-meters under 16 minutes. The others, Betsy Saina, Lisa Koll-Uhl, Meaghan Nelson and Dani Stack. Impressive company. Saturday, the Cyclone men demonstrated their depth at 800 meters. Joah Luque won the triple jump Saturday after claiming the long jump Friday.
