Who in the freaking hell is this band, JPT Scare Band? Some kind of American mystery band from the 1970s who are putting out new CDs in the 21st century. Why has no one ever heard of these guys? Who are they?
    Info
  1. “It’s just not supposed to happen like this. I’m sorry, but a band who hadn’t recorded together in decades and even then, by their own admission “were so very damned obscure,” shouldn’t be able to get back together, plug in, light some incense in their basement studio, and knock out an album this freaking brilliant. But then, JPT Scare Band never did anything by the rule book.

Often mislabeled as... proto-metal, the guys were actually a throwback to the free form, let the music go wherever the bong water bubbles, psychedelic 60s with a hard core blues background and a serious rock and roll heart. After releasing the excellent Past Is Prologue compilation, which culled some old classics with some newer tracks, the guys got motivated to dust off their guitars, amps, wrapping papers, and lava lamps and out poured Jamm Vapour.”

OK After many nights in the basement it is no wonder the Electric House is no longer standing. Have you heard Joe, Dana, and Freds' " When a Beer was a beer" CD? Good Luck

    • Hi, I purchased an album the other day by Wicked Lady -- Axman Cometh. This a late 60s band. Great by the way. Anyway, the lead singer sounds just like JPT Scare Band. Check it out and well worth getting the CD.

  3. "I still think that this record has something to contribute to the setting, bein' it the bluesy feeling or the lenghty jams. This is IT!!! Just listen and learn! I've long since left the musical highway and am now way up on the mountain carrying a torch... Searching for light where darkness is present, or diamonds in the rough if you prefer.... This is such an album. Enjoy!

As of very early on Monday morning, May 19, 2014, we have exactly 1066 Likes for the JPT Scare Band page. Another very good number. 1066 is the year of the Battle Of Hastings, which resulted in the Norman conquest of England. We are quite sure that this epic event had a very strong influence on the music of Traffic, especially their 1970 reunion album, John Barleycorn Must Die.

  6. “The JPT Scare Band had no official beginning. The kind hand of fate brought Jeff, Paul and I together in 1973 and left us to sort it out. We moved to a house and set up our gear in the basement. As we jammed away the days and nights, an odd organic process was set in motion. Jeff, Paul and I discovered that we could make a mighty noise. Rather than question this remarkable development, the three of us simply accepted it as fact. We rarely discussed chords or arrangements; those things were beside the point. All that concerned us was combining our energy and using it to create a habitable musical world. Once we made that happen, our travels began.”

The beauty of the JPT Scare Band is its ability to function as a unit in the nebulous field of the freeform heavy jam. They start with a chord progression and the rest is a musical conversation, the direction dictated by unspoken energies. ...Terry Swope is a gawdam genius. One of the best all around soul guitarists I’ve ever heard. The kind that are unencumbered by strict technique and play solely based on smoldering emotion. Definitely in the league with the best in that genre...Hendrix, Duane Allman, Robin Trower and Carlos Santana. The end result is nothing short of mind blowing. A must for those into heavy psych and/or those that are true aficionados of the mysteries of the jam.”

  8. “Not for the weak, I almost think that this should have been packaged with a warning label: THIS ALBUM MAY CAUSE SERIOUS MUSCLE STRAIN DUE TO UNCONTROLLABLE FITS OF AIR GUITAR. USE WITH CAUTION. If history had unfolded differently, or had they hooked up with a proper label at the time, there would undoubtedly be another guitar hero honored in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”

Hey, way back in 2010, on the Rhapsody Music web site, there was a blog called Classic Rock Crate Digger. They did a blog about 10 Essential Proto-Metal Albums. "If vintage proto-metal is your thing, then here are 10 essential albums that w...ill blow your doors clear off." Their list includes the JPT album, Past Is Prologue, at #7, along with such as Vanilla Fudge, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck, Uriah Heep, Blue Oyster Cult, Scorpions and Blue Cheer. Indeed, they described Past Is Prologue as, "Proto-Metal Heaven."

  11. "They are brain shaking phenomenal. Why did so few notice back then? Hopefully people will give Terry and the band their due this time. Also, with this release, you wonder why a band with this much talent and chemistry walked away from recording for twenty years. Were they ahead of their time? Were they somehow lost in the shuffle or underpromoted? Were they mismanaged or frustrated by their lack of recognition? Whatever the reasons, I'm just glad they're back…Their music is psychedelic/stoner/bluesrock ecstasy. Blissful assurance that great music is truly timeless."

  16. Here's another list of top proto-metal albums that includes JPT Scare Band, this time for the Sleeping Sickness CD. On this one, we're #10 and in such august company as Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster, Budgie and Sir Lord Baltimore. #11 is Pentagram and #12 is the Scorpions. Favorite quotes from the blog? "These teenage wastoids named their band after the first letter in each of their names and began decades of dark acid rock... JPT Scare Band began on earth and soon traversed time and space leaving all material possessions and reasonable song length behind." Love being referred to as "wastoids."
  17. Review of Jamm Vapour CD:
"JPT Scare Band has chemistry to spare, and it shows in songs like 'Ramona' and 'Right Mind.' When they just let loose and jam, JPT Scare Band's just as relevant today as they were back in the day.”

  18. Review of Past Is Prologue CD
"Those amongst you who yearn for the days of Frank Marino and Robin Trower blazing away are in for a treat. Because this is a remarkable release considering its origins three decades ago. The vocals are used sparingly and what you're left with is a series of focused jams, spiraling onwards and upwards. Terry Swope, guitar and vox, Paul Grigsby, bass and vox, and Jeff Littrell on drums must surely wonder why they remained in the third division all those years ago while Mountain and Cactus were releasing major label records."

  21. "With the success of Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Blue Cheer, power trios were all over the place in the mid-1970s. Kansas City’s JPT Scare Band was likely common to the era, a band fond of long song structures, steaming guitar solos, almost obscene volume and a general penchant of beating riffs into submission. It’s not hard to imagine bands like JPT Scare – drummer Jeff Littrell, bass...ist Paul Grigsby and guitarist /singer Terry Swope (hence JPT) – jamming in garages nationwide in 1973. More difficult to fathom is that the band was still together and pretty much at the height of its powers when a 2007 magazine article on heavy metal pioneers featured the trio – which helped fuel an already in motion rediscovery."

  22. "ACID BLUES IS THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN, a fuzz-laden seven track time machine trip through the formative years of hard rock via a bevy of organically organized hazy blues jams that wouldn’t sound out of place between Hendrix, Cream and Zeppelin on classic rock radio. Throw in some garage rock charm, a dash of Blue Cheer rhythmic rattle, explosive fretwork fireworks melding Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page and an unadulterated rock ‘n roll spirit and you’ve got the makings of a band long overdue to collect the praise and adoration they richly deserve."
