Good Bye (for now) and Thank You! from the JEARS Media Team

With the second anniversary of the 11 March tsunami and earthquake just a month away, it is time for the JEARS team to move on. We feel that our time is best focused on helping the animal shelters in Japan on an individual level and that JEARS has served it's purpose for the time being.

We will leave the JEARS page for the foreseeable future or until a time when it will serve others in need, as it served us.

...

We can not express deeply enough the gratitude we have for you - our supporters - who, because of your generosity, enabled people in Japan to save the lives of and re-home hundreds of animals.

Efforts continue in Fukushima by the individual shelters so please support those shelters on their own pages.

Along with HEART and AFN we also support the Hoshi family. The Hoshi family have been relentlessly working in the Fukushima zone since 11 March rescuing animals. The Hachiko Coalition is currently running a chip in for the Hoshi family (link below), please take the time to click the link and find out a bit more about what the Hoshi family has been doing and of course any donations will go a long way to help this amazing family and their mission to help as many animals as possible in Fukushima.

'Sanozuke. This poor old boy has lost half a leg and has a badly infected stump. He also, at some point, has his ears and tail partially cut off. Abuse maybe? He was destined for euthanasia yesterday, but we decided he deserved another chance. We're hoping he will recover from his infection.
'Kuromame. He was judged to be too scared of people to be adoptable. We were his last chance. This seems not to be the case, as he shyly waves his tail anytime anyone comes in his room.
黒豆です。人間不信で譲渡できないと判断された子で、AFNが彼のラストチャンスでした。部屋に入ると尻尾をちょっぴり自信なく尻尾を振ってくれるのどこが人間不信ですか。'

The Fukushima Animals Support Group in Toronto is putting on a fundraising event on Friday, 25 January. It looks like it will be a great evening

Over the recent Christmas holiday period Animal Friends Niigata continued to work tirelessly rescuing animals and assisting local families with pets in Fukushima. Please take a moment to read about the work that continues in Tohoku.

Animal Friends Japan added 17 new photos to the album: The Last Rescue Mission of 2012.

People who have never been to Japan and only know it from film, video or photography think of it as a picturesque country filled with cherry blossoms, temples, ...quaint hotels, hot-springs and monkeys in the hot springs! Well, it is all of these things at different times of the year. But the reality of winter is quite different. It is cold, harsh and inhospitable, and the only people who find the snow attractive are the tourists and the skiers. The deep snowfalls make communication in the mountainous regions of the Tohoku difficult, and, for starving animals roaming there, it is certain death. Already weakened by lack of food, the cold kills. It is for this reason we do what we do at Animal Friends Niigata. Every animal life is too precious for us to turn away. These animals were abandoned once by the Government of Japan. We cannot turn our back on them.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yuki would like to take a moment from relaxing to wish all our supporters a Happy 2013!

Yuki was rescued from Fukushima in July of 2011 and has taken up residence at HEART in Tokushima. Susan tells us that she is a real character - a laid-back cruiser who likes to laze around - Yuki's favourite place to hang out? Next to the food bowl of course! Susan thinks Yuki might still remember the hard times in Fukushima and likes to make sure that there is always... food about ;o)

As much as Yuki likes it at HEART, we think what would make 2013 really great for her is a forever home, lets hope Yuki finds a loving family to hang out with soon!

Fukushima Animals Support Group in Toronto had its inaugural event on 16 December, 2012.
Total of 9 supporters (plus 1 organiser) gathered for a nice charity luncheon (gluten-free vegan and vegetarian catered for)
We had a slide show to introduce two organisations we support, JEARS and Hoshi Family.
Our co-organiser Taeko who is from Fukushima shared her experience on her effort to support her home, Fukushima.
Ayumi, one of our members, volunteered to play her beautiful violi...n.
At the end of our luncheon, Taeko recited (in Japanese and English) a poem written by her high school teacher, Ryoichi Wago, who is also a published poet.

I was very touched to see how very sincere, generous, and supportive everyone was.
They were very happy to be there to support our cause. I could not have asked for a better crowd.
Everyone was just so wonderful, it was a very important first step we took as a group.

Doug Wedel of Toronto, who was not able to make it to our event generously made a donation over $100, and Olga who was there also make a kind donation on the spot!

Our group raised total of $278.20 from our inaugural event, and total amount we raised this year is $287.46. (for breakdown of the proceeds, please go to http://www.meetup.com/Fukushima-Animals-Support-Group-in-T…/)

All our proceeds from this year will go to JEARS and Hoshi Family.
