MRI technology could save more and more trees.
A team of international scientists has used high-resolution CT and MRI scans to visualize water-carrying vessels inside living plants, which the researchers hope will one day help farmers cultivate sturdier crops.
To lug water and nutrients up large distances, trees contain microscopic vessels called xylem. These work like straws – as water evaporates through the leaves, moisture is sucked up from the soil through the roots to r...eplenish stocks.
The more water evaporates, the more water xylem have to draw up. But in dry soil, roots often suck in air bubbles instead, which block and dry up the xylem. These “embolisms” have been reported as one of the major causes of plant death during extreme drought events.

The Venice Islands in Italy were built on a foundation of tree trunks and 1200 years later, those same trunks still support almost all of central Venice. They will stay there for thousands of years more as long as they stay submerged. Because they are not exposed to oxygen, they do not rot. They actually have begun to petrify due to the mineral rich water. So in another thousand years, they will actually become stone pilings.

The Manchineel’s bark is covered in sap that causes skin to blister and can blind a person if it gets in their eyes. Even standing under the tree in the rain can cause blisters because the sap will drip onto skin.
The tree’s fruit, known as the “beach apple” or “death apple,” ...is slightly sweet but very painful to eat. Ulceration of the mouth and esophagus will occur from just a small bite and consumption can be lethal. Smoke from burning Manchineel wood can cause blindness, and the sap has historically been used to coat arrows for hunting. Today it’s an endangered species in Florida.
