NOAA says Kauai storm may have set national record with nearly 50 inches in 24 hours!

PRELIMINARY DATA DOWNLOADED FROM A REMOTE RAIN GAGE IN NORTH KAUAI INDICATE THAT RAINFALL DURING THE FLASH FLOOD EVENT ON APRIL 14-15, 2018 BROKE THE U.S. 24-HOUR RAINFALL RECORD. THE RAIN GAGE, LOCATED IN WAIPA ABOUT ONE MILE WEST OF HANALEI, RECORDED 49.69 INCHES OF RAINFALL DURING THE 24-HOUR PERIOD ENDING AT 12:45 PM HST APRIL 15. THIS TOTAL, IF CERTIFIED, WILL BREAK THE CURRENT U.S. 24-HOUR RECORD OF 43 INCHES AT ALVIN, TX ON JULY 25-26, 1979, AND THE STATE OF HAWAII RECORD OF 38 INCHES AT KILAUEA (KAUAI) ON JANUARY 24-25, 1956.

A Maui group is petitioning Alexander & Baldwin to provide 15% of its old sugar cane lands, or about 5,000 acres, for the public good. They say it's a way for A&B to invest in Maui's future by supporting housing, small farms, parks and more. An A&B spokesperson tells us the company is open to it. Lisa Kubota will have much more tonight tonight at 5 and 6.

Where's The Aloha? Here's a story from 2007 trying to answer that question (back when Kim Gennaula was my co-pilot). It includes interviews with Rabbit Kekai and Danny Kaleikini. Uncle Danny is so classic. Check out his simple advice at the end. Aloha!

Mahalo to Aaron Feinberg for sharing this revealing drone video above Hanalei Bay. Besides the obvious property damage you can really see how the river has carved new paths through the area near the Hanalei Pier.

Today's update: Senator Brian Schatz says the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved emergency funds to restore essential traffic on Kuhio Highway. Navy crews have been helping with the repair efforts in Wainiha and Waikoko. Yesterday Mayor Carvalho estimated that it might take a month to get a passable lane along that stretch of coast.

The Buzzfeed show 'Worth It' tried out three different fish meals from $9 to $140. Spoiler alert: they liked them all, but were most impressed with Ahi Assassins and Chef Mavro.

These are two of my favorite people, and pictures, from this year's Merrie Monarch Festival. Aunty Irene brings me the most beautiful lei every night and we have such a nice time talking. And Iwalani Ho’omanawanui Apo is so full of aloha. She really makes me feel welcome in the musicians area. Mahalo to all the wonderful people of Hilo, and Hawaii, for another fantastic year!

The 'Flame of Hope' for this summer's Special Olympics Hawaii originates from Madam Pele. Volunteers made a 7-hour hike to an active lava flow in Kalapana yesterday to light the torch. The flame was transferred to four lamps which will be used at upcoming Law Enforcement Torch Runs statewide. The U.S. Coast Guard will transport the flames between islands.
