Q2P is an amazing film by Paromita Vohra which will be screened and discussed at the London Anthropology Day this year. Here is a link to the trailer and the Director's Statement.
Q2P DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:
How did one make a film about toilets which wouldn’t instantly have people giggling? How did one make a film about toilets and gender – indeed why would one – if it was just going to state in some sense the obvious? The obvious being: women don’t have enough public toilet...s, and this says something about the perception of their presence in public spaces?
The film began with some of these questions, which led me to a slightly simpler one – why did I want to make a film about toilets? Because, I realized, everyone pees, everyone shits and yet everyone is silent about it.
As time went by the effort was to make a film which would go beyond that obvious thing to make some connections and offer a way of thinking about the city and the world we want to remake as we rebuild our cities. To speak not just of the toilets, but of the city via the toilet.
There’s a reason why I felt it necessary to undertake the endeavour. It’s also because despite whatever folks say to the contrary, it’s always an effort for people of other disciplines to see art as a place for suggesting ideas and ways of thinking. People’s idea of film, especially the documentary form, is that it is illustrative, somehow a carrier of ideas generated elsewhere, when in fact the creative endeavour is really a way of seeing and of seeking conversation in the world. To me, the film is a continuation of my engagement with this approach.
Due to the overwhelming number of registered participants we are closing London Anthropology Day registration early. Last day of registration is Thursday 27th June at 5:00pm
We have a wonderful opportunity for 4 lucky participants to shoot their own film exploring their discovery of anthropology and experience of London Anthropology Day.
This is a chance for you to work with the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) and a professional videographer to make your own creative film which will be published by the RAI and distributed through various online and offline communication platforms.
You don’t have to have any previous exposure to anthropology... or video shooting experience, just a willingness to be creative, have fun and enjoy communication through visual means.
At the end of the project we will have a special screening and Q&A event at the RAI with all the film makers.
If you are interested please email education@therai.org.uk for an application form asap.
Entry deadline is Tuesday 25th June 2013
Unfortunately due to the large number of applications we will only be able to contact shortlisted candidates.
Thanks and Best,
Nafisa
