Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow writes:
"For all those who are tired of tinkering with the machine and believe that truly transformative change is required if we are ever going to build an inclusive, multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy that truly values all of us (and yet wonder how in the world we might go about building a movement that could actually achieve the scale of change required), this book is for you. It's a virtual tool box -- a highly engaging int...roduction to many of the strategies, tactics and methodologies for nonviolent, revolutionary change that have been employed in the United States and around the world with surprising results. The greatest lie told to the American people today is that we really have no power to change things, that the most we can do is vote for the lesser evil and keep our chin up. Yet history teaches the opposite is true."
My essay on the life and work of Eduardo Galeano is now out in the current issue of The Nation Magazine. He's an author who has always meant a lot to me, so I was thrilled to be able to take a deep dive into his writing.
"A literature...deeply immersed in the risks and events of its time can indeed help to create the symbols of the new reality.”
The great Donald Kaul has died. Prairie Populist, enemy of meanness and hypocrisy. He wrote fast and well and made it look easy. Also: he was funny. We had his columns on Nixon's death pinned to our bedroom wall. Rest in peace.
A shout out from Rep. Jamie Raskin for #ThisIsAnUprising! Now if we can just get a copy to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez…
I got some good family input on this article from Rosslyn Wuchinich and Francis Engler. The takeaway: there are a lot of badass work-to-rule stories out there. I could barely scratch the surface here!

Dear friends—The great Lina Blount is helping to coordinate a multi-part training at Pendle Hill called Radical Faithfulness in Action, to be led by the great Matthew Armstead. The training is centered around supporting organizers asking how spiritual practice informs their organizing over the long haul, or folks with spiritual community asking how to live their values more boldly in the world to affect change.
I’m told that there are still significant scholarship funds on ...the table for organizers who are committed to this work but for whom finances are a barrier. They had an initial application deadline of a couple days ago, but I think they are still accepting on a rolling basis, so don’t be dissuaded.
More info below. Check it out!

-- Give and receive support in ongoing social justice work outside the course; and
-- Deepen spiritual practices that will build resilience in carrying on the work.
There will be some online/webinar work in-between these weekends to support application of learning, and participants’ individual goals.

Pendle Hill holds a commitment to try and match any funds someone can raise on their own-- and in some cases can offer more than that 50% scholarship.
While I’m posting about my dad’s time as a Catholic priest, it’s worth flagging this story. In the Vatican II days, so much was changing that there was speculation that married priests might be a possibility. That got shut down in the more conservative decades that followed. But it’s always been an open question for theologians, and Pope Francis is showing that things might not be static.

My brother Paul posted this story, so I thought I would share as well. Paul writes:
"The Engler Family went through some family history as part of our speech in accepting the Dingman award from Catholic Peace Ministries for our family's peace and justice work. This picture is part of an important story my father told us. This is a picture of my dad with Pope John the 23rd, who started the Catholic Reform movement called Vatican II. My dad was not supposed to be in the picture.... At the time he was a low-level priest who had a growing mission to do criminal justice reform. He was doing prison rehabilitation in Iowa, and he was constantly in conflict with his more conservative church hierarchy in northern Iowa in the early 60s.
"My dad was at the Vatican with a delegation from Iowa. He was a lowly priest and was not supposed to come to the special audience that his bishop was to have with the pope. After petitioning to come, his bishop allowed him to join, but told him to be silent and in the background, and to leave before the honorary picture with his holiness at the conclusion. But Pope John the 23rd, before he became pope, did prison ministry and loved social justice work. After hearing that my dad was part of a criminal justice reform effort and did prison ministry, the pope wanted to talk to him all about it. He was not interested as much in the conversation with the bishop.
"After the audience with his holiness, the pope pulled my dad into the picture and put him at his right hand for the photo. My dad thought this was so funny, that he was at the right hand of the holy father, and the bishop was on the left. My dad made many copies of the picture and gave it out to his friends. He told the story while laughing at his resistance to church hierarchy. I think his bishop probably was not too happy."
I'm proud that my partner Rosslyn is mentioned on this list alongside so many awesome friends and colleagues!!
I'm also happy that there are so many great union women included, as these lists often lean heavily toward nonprofits.

I am late to this, but it's awesome: @sarahrlnrd on what's really needed to stop sexual harassment in the workplace--organizing, collective action, unions.
