We are happy to announce the arrival of the Maryland State Archives' brand-new Search Room Photo Stand. Archivally safe LED light bulbs provide excellent lighting for your photography, with your personal camera attached to the adjustable mounting plate. Located to the left of our Circulation Desk, the photo stand is a great resource for your next visit.
While our regular fees still apply to certified copies of documents and copies of oversized records, use of the photo stand is free!
We will be posting instructions in our Search Room, but for now, here are a few tips:
1. Turn off camera flash.
2. Remove mounting plate by lifting grey lever, and attach to camera base.
3. Re-attach mounting plate to stand. Camera should now be facing straight down.
4. Switch on both lights.
5. Place archival record on base.
6. You are now ready to photograph the record!

Beginning this year, our new #IntoTheArchives series has been taking you behind-the-scenes at the Maryland State Archives. Follow our posts on Instagram and Facebook!
Last week on Instagram, we went #IntotheArchives to our general Scanning Department. Here at the Maryland State Archives, we scan many types of records. Often, each record type calls for a specific kind of scanner depending on its current state. Our most popular sources of images range from maps, photographs, and negatives, to manuscripts, newspapers, printed text documents, and books. Image capture devices include scanners ranging from wide format, sheet fed, overhead, and flatbed. We have them all to get the job done right!
Once images are scanned, they go through our Quality Control Department and are then uploaded to the Guide to Government Records. We also scan documents for other agencies, and can provide public or private website access to them in addition to delivering them by hard drive or File Transfer Protocol (FTP). We save all images to our servers, both on-site and in duplicate off-site.
To learn more, and to learn how to apply some of these techniques to the preservation of your own files, check out this great video provided by Scanning manager Corey Lewis from the March 18th Brown Bag Lunch & Learn!
