World Health Organization (WHO) added 6 new photos to the album: Vaccination against Meningococcal A in sub-Saharan Africa.

This month, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad are introducing a revolutionary new vaccine designed to eliminate group A meningitis epidemics that have been plaguing su...b-Saharan Africa for more than a century.
During the space of a few weeks, the three countries are aiming to vaccinate over 22 million 1-29 year-olds. WHO has been working closely with the ministries of health in the countries organizing the campaigns throughout the year to help them prepare.

Meningococcal meningitis, against which this vaccine protects, is a bacterial form of meningitis, a serious infection of the meninges that affects the brain membrane. It can cause severe brain damage and is fatal in 50% of cases if untreated.

To learn more about meningococcal meningitis, read WHO factsheet: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs141/…/index.html
