Monday evening, October 1st, the Westchester Board of Legislators voted 12 to 5 to pass the Earned Paid Sick Time law. The new law will ensure that people working in Westchester County will have a minimum of 5 job-protected paid sick days for those working at employers with 5 or more employees, and job-protected unpaid days for those at smaller employers. This includes an inclusive definition of family for those needing to care for a family member with a short-term illness. Prior to the bill, more than 120,000 people in Westchester wouldn’t get paid if they missed a day of work because they're sick. The legislation is expected to go into effect in six months.
