-- THROWBACK THURSDAY --
The year was 1999 and after a gruelling 4 week tryout a young Dean Paps & Adam Bartas are selected to represent Mazenod College to compete in the inaugural Victorian Secondary School Lawn Bowl Championship AKA the VSSLBC.
Set in the last week of May, the championship was held at arguably the finest Lawn Bowls club in all of Victoria, the Glen Waverley Bowls Club.
Going in as underdogs didn't seem to phase the teenage duo and after a fatiguing day of... action packed lawn bowling, Bartas & Paps found themselves in the final against a ferocious St Bede's College. Led by Dan 'Bowls Deep' Sheraton, St Bede's were going to be tough to beat. The final would be settled over a best-of-three set match, the first to 7 points wins a set.
After a brutal and seesawing affair, both teams found themselves tied at 1 set each and the score was 6-6 in the third with one bowl left to play. No one could believe it, no one saw it coming, the championship would be decided by the final bowl of the day. It was all up to Dean Paps, he'd been dreaming of this moment all his life.
With sweat dripping down his sun soaked forehead there were whispers of him cracking under the pressure, but after some reassuring words of encouragement from his mate Bartas he stepped up to the plate with a look of resilience in his eyes. Paps assumed his classic bowling position, took a deep breathe, said a little prayer to the lawn bowls gods, and let it rip. He had only one objective, knock the St Bede's bowl out of position and get his bowl closest to the Jack, do that and the championship would be won.
This brings us to that famous photo, one which hangs proudly over the trophy cabinet at Mazenod College and is probably the schools greatest sporting moment over its 50+ year history. Dean bowling, Bartas nervously looking on, and Dan 'Bowls Deep' Sheraton helplessly spectating in the background, hands on head hoping that young Paps would fail miserably and lose the trophy for Mazenod.
He didn't, he bowled the ball of his life and the boys took home the mother f%*ken trophy!!! And the rest as they say in the lawn bowl fraternity, is history. #yehthelawnbowlboys
