infinitely grateful for the opportunity to work in the late great Tom Rohr's studio at Pleasant Hill Pottery. Good vibes like no other space i've worked in....guess thats what years of "putting the sweet on it" will do. : )
"Finding Change" is the result of a year of collaboration with the Pleasant Hill Pottery wood-fire community in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. Through the abundant generosity of current owners Jesse Jones and Lauren Sommers I had the great privilege of spending the past year living and working at PHP as their first resident artist. In this time we utilized PHP's amazing facility, including four wood-fire kilns, to further experimentation with formulating clay bodies and their reactio...n under specific firing conditions. Through intention and repetition we were able to produce some interesting surface affects by reduction cooling the train kiln in a consistent fashion over multiple firings. We varied only the temperature range in which the kiln was re-oxidized during the cooling. Due to the almost ridiculous frequency of firings at PHP this past year we were able to invite over 30 artists from the region to participate for their first time, as well as the seasoned Pleasant Hill Pottery crew. By facilitating collaboration and community through inclusivity our hope is to broaden social networks and empower artists through practicing problem solving cooperatively, communication with one another effectively and by expanding understanding of natural processes so as to better understand our place in the world and our manipulation of it as a community. - Chris Pate

We are learning to engage the symbols, songs, and traditions of other cultures with reverence and respect… we are learning how to ask permission and how to incl...ude elders and wisdom carriers.
We have updated our video to reflect the early stages of this evolution.
The difficult conversations about cultural appropriation that led to these changes are important to us. Thank you for challenging us to tell our stories without causing harm and to advance our healing mission with integrity. We’ll see you in August…

for the past couple firings in our train kiln, at Pleasant Hill Pottery, I've been researching the affect of various down-firing schedules with many of my porcelain formulations utalizing the iron baring clay laterite. I'd like to share just a few of our results.
