In case you missed it Tuesday, WUSF aired its "Florida Matters" program about the debate over the Tampa Bay Express. It's an interesting chance to hear voices on all sides of the issue, including activists, journalists and transportation leaders.
Forward Pinellas shared Planetizen's post.
The two highest percentages of city populations living downtown belong to Florida metros - Miami and Orlando.
If you're interested in the intersection of government and transportation at the national level, Elaine Chao's nomination hearing is today - she's the nominee to be the next U.S. Secretary of Transportation and is a former Secretary of Labor. This nomination hearing could give some insight into the administration's vision for transportation policy.
Today on the Director's Blog, we're talking about how to make Pinellas County safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. While we still have a long way to go, the good news is that developments to improve our region’s safety are already in motion.
While this is technically a list of apps by planners for planners, the list includes everything from apps that can improve your work commute to an app that can amp up the interest factor of your daily walk.
We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Indian Shores Mayor Jim Lawrence this week. Mayor Lawrence worked to make Pinellas County a great place to live, not only as Indian Shores mayor but as a representative on The BIG-C (Barrier Islands Governmental Council) and a past PSTA board member, among other roles. We extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues. A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m. at the Town of Indian Shores Municip...al Center Pavilion.
Joanne "Cookie" Kennedy, an Indian Rocks Beach commissioner and member of our board representing the beach communities, called Mayor Lawrence a friend and a mentor.
"There are elected officials who talk the talk, but Mayor Jim Lawrence walked the walk," she said, citing his role in negotiating on behalf of the beaches for the first Penny for Pinellas and his work in undergrounding local utilities as examples. "He would give me his honest opinion, and he always supported me in anything I was involved with."
More information on Mayor Lawrence's life and memorial service is available on the Indian Shores website.
Forward Pinellas shared CityLab's post.
While we tend to think of the planning and development of places as, well, planned - sometimes the character of an area is as much about the people who live there and the places they came from. It's also cool to see CityLab feature Dunedin's Delcos!
We're pleased to announce the new leadership and members of our board, including County Commissioner John Morroni as our new chair. Thank you to all our outgoing board members for your service, and to our outgoing chair, St. Petersburg City Councilmember Jim Kennedy.
A comprehensive story from the Tampa Bay Times about the high-end condo projects in downtown St. Petersburg - with one of the highest buildings on Florida's west coast about to be among them.

We have exciting news to share this week: Patti Johnson, a Pinellas Park councilwoman, was named the elected official of the year by the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged. Councilwoman Johnson is a PSTA Board member and the chair of our Local Coordinating Board, which oversees the local Transportation Disadvantaged Program. She does so much in these positions and in her role as a professional guardian to help those who don't have easy access to transportation. Thank you for your dedicated service, Patti - this honor is well-deserved!
We had an end-of-the-year party with Forward Pinellas staff and board members - current, outgoing, and incoming - after our last board meeting of 2016 yesterday. Thank you to all of our board members for your service, and we look forward to working with you in 2017!
A compelling look at citywide planning and the future of Denver, where the city has more people and more cars, but lower density, than it did six decades ago.
With UPS ebike deliveries already happening in Portland, other U.S. cities may see electronically-assisted bike deliveries starting in 2017.
Thank you for your five years of service on the Forward Pinellas Board, Mayor Bujalski!
