Housing & Food Services

Residents, keep up the good work. Those of you who have been using the reusable cups are helping to take one-time cups out of the compostable stream! During aut...umn quarter, HFS distributed reusable mugs to nearly 7,000 residents. Because you chose to go with those rather than the usual (compostable) cups, approximately 4.84 TONS were diverted from the compost cycle. While composting is a worthy endeavor, using fewer cups cuts down on the purchasing, transportation and composting steps, which also have a cost-savings benefit to UW Dining and, you, our customers. Thank you!

Humans of Poplar: Staff Edition

Name: Aaron
Degree: B.S in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (UW)
Poplar Associate Hall Director

What do you like about Seattle?
I enjoy the array of things to explore and enjoy in Seattle! It’s great being close to a vibrant downtown setting and distinct neighborhoods. Plus while living in Seattle, you never have to go far to find outdoor activities; whether it’s running at the Washington Arboretum, skiing at Steven’s Pass or hiking in the Cascades!

How do you contribute to the UW community in a unique way?
As the Associate Hall Director for Poplar Hall, I oversee or assist with the majority of the operations in Poplar Hall. I supervise the Resident Adviser Staff and assist in the management of the community building that they do on each floor, I advise student groups such as the Poplar Hall Council and SEED (Students Expressing Environmental Dedication), and I work with my colleagues in Facilities Services to ensure that all of the amenities in Poplar Hall are functioning correctly. Each of these tasks (in addition to many others) is performed with the goal of enhancing the living experience of every resident in Poplar Hall. The hope is that by us taking care of our resident’s on campus living experience, they will have additional time for academic accomplishments while they are at the UW! I work out of the Poplar Residential Life Office on the ground floor of Poplar Hall, and I encourage every Poplar Hall resident to stop by if they feel that the Poplar Residential Life team is not fulfilling this goal. We are here to support you!
