Advertisement placed in the September 16, 1856, issue of the Practical Observer, a Valparaiso newspaper. The Valparaiso University mentioned here was a private secondary school operated by Jennie M. Calkins and Sophia E. Walker. In 1856, there were at least five private schools operating in Valparaiso.
