This Sunday, December 3, in observance of WORLD AIDS DAY, QFest Houston proudly presents BPM (Beats Per Minute), winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Set during the early 1990’s after a decade of devastating loss of life to AIDS, a group of young ACT UP-Paris members aggressively mobilized to bring attention to France’s AIDS crisis, combatting politically motivated resistance from the French government, greedy pharmaceutical companies, and a still very homophobic public. Director Robin Campillo draws from semi-autobiographical experiences to expertly craft France’s official foreign language Oscar submission. Variety says “[BPM] compellingly combines elegy, tragedy urgency, and a defiant euphoria.”

November means lots of great movies and here's one we hope you'll consider supporting. Our friends at Imagination Worldwide present The Light of the Moon with Stephanie Beatriz Live and In-Person! in Houston this Saturday, November 25 at Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park. The 7:30 PM showing is SOLD OUT so get your tickets to the 10:00 PM before they're gone. Check the trailer here: https://youtu.be/w0nsJewcH-U
The LA Times has this to say about The Light of The Moon: "Arriving ami...d the ground-shifting cultural conversation about sexual assault, “The Light of the Moon” is especially timely. But this unflinching look at one woman’s rape and its consequences would be hard-hitting and revelatory in any season....In ways that perhaps no other movie ever has, Thompson’s incisive narrative peers beneath the cover-all term “aftermath” to the lingering repercussions of rape — medical, legal, emotional and sexual. The film’s concerns are profoundly therapeutic, but it nimbly avoids every therapy-drama cliché.....
Writer-director Jessica M. Thompson brings experience as an editor of documentaries to her feature debut, and her research in this case makes for a clear-eyed film that’s clinical in its specifics. Character dynamics are no less crucial to the story’s impact, with Stephanie Beatriz and Michael Stahl-David powerfully persuasive as, respectively, the assault victim and her boyfriend."

From our friends Jake Margolin and Nick Vaughan: Come and join us on Thursday for some awesome short films about the Houston drag scene back in the day, including the early first outing of a short doc that Nick and I are working on based on a conversation with former Miss Continental, Miss Texas USofA, and Miss Gay Houston Kelly Lauren. We would love your feedback.
Also, Walt Zipprian's "Wendy Chicago" is really beautiful and shouldn't be missed by anyone interested in Housto...n queer history.
Hope to see you there!
(ps there's a good chance that we're going to go find a drag show to watch and throw money at the entertainers after . . . so you can come for the whole experience . . . )

"Beginning in the early-1970's, the work of artist Barbara Hammer has explored issues relating to women, gender roles, sexuality, lesbian relationships, and, in recent years, coping with family and age. Having created the earliest and most extensive body of avant-garde films on lesbian life and sexuality, Hammer is revered as a pioneer of queer cinema, a compassionate feminist, and an elder innovative media artist." She'll be in attendance at Aurora Picture Show's 17th annual Aurora Award Dinner on October 26th. Be there if you can!
