We, Punch's Alley, a co-operative on campus that operates to serve the entire Wellesley community, would like to address some concerns we had about the Queer Trivia Night that we hosted today.

Part of our effort to serve community members is based in allocating time, space, and resources - financial and otherwise - so the idea of collaborating with QCAB is wonderful and something we enjoyed doing. However, the event came with some issues about the large amount of money being... allocated to the event and the safety concerns of holding the event as originally advertised.

Although the event has passed, we want to propose how we can work with the Advisor to LGBTQ students, Leah Fygetakis, and QCAB to better allocate the remaining money in a way that reflects our values as a cooperative and the needs of LGBTQ students on our campus. We do not believe that it was equitable or fair to allocate this amount of money to a single event when organizations under the Advisor to LGBTQ students’ purview are unable to fund their events. In response, we have sent a letter to Leah to propose the following for the remaining funds:

1) Coordinating with the unconstituted LGBTQ organizations on campus and redistributing the remaining funds from this event to their events and initiatives
2) Collaborating with the organizations under the advisory of Wellesley College LGBT Programs & Services Office to bring queer artists of color to our campus to speak or perform.

We know that Independent organizations usually have many more difficulties acquiring funds through the CG Treasury. They would benefit the most from extra funding to hold events that touch on diverse LGBTQ experiences. We also believe that a speaker who can represent intersectional identities is an important piece of dialogue that is currently missing from this campus.

We express these wishes with the knowledge that Leah will have the final say on how these funds will be utilized, but we urge her to consider the above proposals. We hope that her office holds more events in the future that are representative of and relevant to the communities that it serves.

Thank you for hearing us out, and keep an eye out for surveys coming soon where you will be able to share with us how you’d like to see our space used. We want everyone to have a good time!

With love,
Punch’s Alley Staff

Join us at the pub this weekend!

On Friday, we invite our trans sibs and allies to an open mic and night of crafting to unwind from a week that has demanded much of their energy, creativity, and time. Allies are welcome, but please be mindful of this as a space for relaxation and calm.

On Saturday, we are screening "Born in Flames," a movie exploring a future in which a socialist government gains power, and a group of women decides to organize and rebel.
