Artisan Camera

by Suresh Punjabi (Author), Christopher Pinney (Editor)

Artisan Camera is a testimony to an era of hands-on studio photography, when physical m...aterials combined with the photographer's artistry to shape the final image. This book features work from Studio Suhag in Nagda, a small town in central India. Suresh Punjabi - the studio's proprietor and photographer - showcases some of his vintage photographs from the 1970s and 1980s. They evoke a world where the studio portrait was an important memento, capturing not just the 'real' subject, but also a persona made over to meet the camera's eye. The images, by Suresh Punjabi, are a testament to an era of hands-on studio photography when physical materials combined with the photographer’s ingenuity to stage and record astonishing and poignant human dramas. They present a space in which the camera captured not only “real” subjects, but also personae made over to meet the camera’s eye. Here are laborers and bohemians, villagers and townspeople, the devout and the cosmopolitan. All are depicted with the aid of a relatively fixed repertoire of backdrops, lights, and accessories. A richly argued essay by visual anthropologist Christopher Pinney - author of Camera Indica - places Punjabi's work in the context of a fascinating visual history

Kerala: The Spice Coast of India - Raghubir Singh

Raghubir Singh, in Kerala, provides an interesting insight into the culture and landscape of Kerala and the M...alabar Coast. Singh's work goes beyond the typical travelogue and shows us, in depth, the daily life of these diverse people. Singh (1942-1999) was best known for his documentary-style, small-format street photography of the people of India. He chose to work in color-color being intrinsic to Indian aesthetics.

Ram Rahman is with Shalini Sawhney and 11 others.

My talk on William Gedney and his India photos. I knew Gedney well having met him through Raghubir Singh. June 14th, Bombay. I will place Gedney in the New York... street photography scene where he was a highly respected though hugely reticent photographer. His reaction to India's street culture is quite unique and I will focus extensively on this. He was also an enormous influence on Raghubir Singh, who met him first in Calcutta.

“When I read ‘Letters to a Young Poet’ (by Rainer Maria Rilke), it inspired me to take that huge leap of faith to tell the stories I wanted to tell. There is so... much information and so many facts out there… but the only things that last are our stories and memories.” Catching up with Photographer and INK Fellow, Chandan Gomes this week on the INK Hour.
