Introducing MARK the Illustrated Gospel. It's the second time I've been involved in this project... the first time was LUKE. It's been a long while since last November when I completed my 'not so colourful' artwork for this and now that it's been made into a book/resource; which I am glad to share with you.
I'm page 163, but here is a pic and the description behind it.
Mark 15:21-41 Cross and death
While the purpose of the cross is to be celebrated and God worshipped for his... extreme faithfulness to us, this scene is not meant to be palatable; in fact, I hope to convey the almost helpless repulsion of this dark scenario.

The word toxic came to mind as I read this text… hence the toxic coloured skull. What people were shouting out to our beloved saviour Jesus sounded like verbal poison. The hatred was heavy; it felt dark and the situation noxiously consuming.

Golgotha, the place of the skull and the skull itself is the universal symbol of death and is easily read here.

While two crucifix shapes are suggested left and right, the space is purposely sparse, as this death setting, one of decided self-sacrifice covering all sin, was for Jesus only.
The reddened vertical beam of Christs cross represents his blood that transcends time past, present and future, his blood covers all.

The textured background, layered and ‘crud like’, is there to signal the human sin that Christ’ light form contrasts… the darkest death contrasts the purist form.

I'm hoping viewers of this painting will understand at a gut wrenching level, the revolting sin nature of man and realise our own personal need for Jesus even more.
