I am honored to compete in the Buzzed Spelling Bee following that really awesome event. My great hope is that I win, straight up, hands down, and without using any lifelines.
Crucial photo cred: Good Ol' Tony Pugliese
Edit: I came in second place. I lost by spelling "ukulele" U-K-E-L-E-L-E. I played it safe and used lifelines, but I never would have won. If, at any point, I had been given the word "ukulele," I would have misspelled it, confidently and quickly, imagining that I was right as hell.
I'm honored to join Artists & Allies in support.of Jennifer Roberts for Charlotte Mayor tonight at Petra's. My great hope is that Mayor Roberts, who I know to have a deep commitment to what is right and good, will continue to use her office as an opportunity to be a stalwart and increasingly vocal defender of justice, equality, and civil rights, and a tireless opponent to discrimination in Charlotte and beyond.
I am a white straight cis male artist, from Charlotte, North Carolina, active and present in my community.
By speaking up when I am witness to them, I intentionally separate my heart from racism, misogyny, and hate in public and private spaces.
In my personal life, with the help of my partner and my friends, I look closely at myself. I work to notice when I exhibit these behaviors. By paying attention, I become conscious of my unconscious biases. I become aware of my bad lang...uage habits, leftovers of childhood and adolescence. It's work I'll always need to do.
You should, too. It can be downright revolting to accept the idea that you have participated in damaging behaviors, both in the moment and over time. But if you don't look honestly, you'll never see, and you'll never come correct.
Come correct, dudes. Get nice, be nice. Be good, stay good.

HELP A PLAYWRIGHT DO A PLAY RIGHT
I have resisted crowdfunding my own work until now, but this is big news for me - my first original play will be staged at the Duke Energy Theater in early August. We have a lot of smart, creative people involved, but we need some help mounting the show. Please check out the campaign, contribute to the project, and share the hell out of it. If we do this the right way, I should never need to ask the community to fund a show again.
Notably, we aren't asking for you to contribute to this and then purchase tickets afterwards - donations at the ticket price or higher guarantee you admission. Show love!
A truly unique art experience is occurring this Friday - C3 Labs is hosting a creative event that is part evolving art installation, part showcase of Charlotte's greatest music, part party. $10 at the door, free beer from Three Spirits Brewing, and some of my favorite artists in Charlotte. The show starts on time y'all, grab a 7PM burrito and come on out to C3 Labs.
Last night The Dead Men and I got together with Human Pippi and Beach Bath and delivered something emotionally acute at Thomas Street Tavern on a Monday night in a dining room. We write about fantasy and love, and partying, and nature and death and the infinite. Come see music, dance, and art that is made with the heart & mind tomorrow night at the conclusion to Triptych Collective's Snug Harbor residency. It's $2
I'm getting up with Ricky for a rap show! Come out to the World Famous Milestone Club (official) tonight and give em your money
Alea Tuttle, Geoff White and I will join Taproot for their dance/spoken performance of Dinner Bell: A Field Guide to Impolite Southern Conversation this weekend at Petra's! Come see an honest conversation about what it is like to grow up a woman in the American southeast.
I think bandcamp only counts people who paid, not free DLs but I'm still at #25 on the bandcamp chart after releasing at midnight.
