The Total Clean Diesel Story
One of SA POI's more ambitious POI projects is to compile a clean diesel fuel collection for a GPS. One must realise that the GPS built-in POIs only lists fuel stations with no reference to whether they stock clean diesel (about 1 in 4 service stations stock clean diesel). We have approached all oil companies in South Africa to provide SA POI with accurate GPS coordinates of their ULS service stations. Engen and Caltex published their ULS service ...stations on the web. After many emails, Total has supplied their ULS service station list. Similar requests to Shell, Sasol and BP have been unsuccessful to date. For our own use we compiled a Shell Ultracities list where I can fill up with clean Diesel. There are not any other options at present than Shell for clean diesel between Laingsburg and Kimberley in our collection.
On our recent holiday, we were geared up with all our custom POIs for the South African “Nature Reserves” and ultra low sulphur filling stations on our GPS. From home to Kimberley we were filling up with Shell V-Power Diesel from the POIs that we have compiled. Now here is where the “Total story” begins. Because we had the Total ULS POIs on our GPS we filled up with four tanks of Total Eco Diesel Premium Plus as they were the closest clean diesel to our places of stay. It was just unfortunate that the other two oil companies that cooperated with SA POI did not have ULS available in these areas. For the other oil companies we wish they will wake up and provide their GPS coordinates to SA POI. We filled up at Total Mooinooi for two day trips to Borakalalo National Park. Arriving at Bela-Bela we filled up at Total Vyfster Dienste for visiting Nylsvley Nature Reserve. On route to Pilanesberg National Park the closest ULS was found at Thabazimbi.
Total have benefited from provided their ULS POIs to SA-POI and as we start to distribute this information via a world wide web download, everybody who do not send their coordinates will not benefit from this initiative.
Viewing platform in Mokala National Park. After the November 2011 visit to Karoo NP, Mokala NP, Borakalalo NP, Nylsvley NR and Pilanesberg NP, SA POI's "Parks and Reserves" POI collection has grown to 740 POIs. A GPS with custom nature POIs has proven its utility on such holiday trips, especially for game viewing, birding and photography. Note that this data is not available to the public without request.
