Having a blast fat tire biking in Stagecoach on a beautiful winter day. And I was the first one to ride the new specialized bike #lucky #sofun #greatbikes #greatpeople #greatviews
Hello friends and followers! We've received many calls inquiring about fishing and ice conditions at the park this week. The icing process has begun, but there is yet to be fishable ice on the reservoir. The inlet (pictured) has begun to ice over and the ice has nearly reached the Lot 14 restroom. Historically, complete ice-on occurs in the last week of December.
In-spite of the lack of ice, anglers are reporting active and successful open-water fishing (from shore or hand-la...unched watercraft), producing many 20" rainbows and the occasional pike. Successful techniques include powerbait, jigs, spoons, and hardbaits. Fly fishing the reservoir has also been successful utilizing streamers and bead-head nymphs.
The road to the Tailwater is open through December 31 (closes Jan. 1). The Tailwater is fishing great right now. With winter weather setting in the crowds have diminished and the fishing is great. We have seen fish rising to Blue Wings and Midges on snowy overcast days. Make sure you are fishing 6x fluorocarbon tippet, micro split shot and small indicators as this section is low, clear and spooky this time of year.
It's an exciting morning here at Stagecoach State Park...our resident elk herd has arrived for their winter refuge! Also at sunrise, there was a thin sheet of ice across half the lake. That will surely dissipate in the sun, but the cold nights have allowed the process to start in earnest. Feels like winter!
Take a break, hit play, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy some of the best wildlife and landscape images of the year. If you have a favorite let us know in the comments.

Moonrise over an ice-free reservoir. That may change soon...the barometer is dropping as a cold front approaches!
Not the conditions we are used to seeing at this time of year but at least folks are getting out and taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather.
