30 Day Decluttering Challenge - Free eBook 📙 😻 📕 -
End clutter with this $5 trick: Go to your living room. Assign a $5 value to each item in it. Add up each item counting by $5. Pick self up off floor after realizing how much money you've spent. Sell crap on eBay. Swim in your newfound money.
I've been working on a book for a while now, but the progress hasn't been as quick as I'd like, because...slacker. So. I thought I would share it with you day by day.
The premise is that most organizing books are really overwhelming. "Just get rid of all your things and voila! You'll be organized". Oh....gee. Why didn't I think of that? #$%@&!!!!
I unearth the same organizing books over and over in client's homes. When I hand them the book, they grin and g...ive a sheepish shrug. The book didn't work, or I wouldn't be in their living room. So let's try something new.
"Simplified 365" is a day by day guide and checklist that will only require 15 minutes a day to complete. I don't know about you guys, but unless I have a (very short) list to follow that says "DO THIS", I don't get anything done. My hope is that this will be the guide you need as we move area by area through your home and life to declutter, simplify and organize the thing once and for all.
You in? Head to www.thesimplifiedlife.org to start.
As I post each day this year, I'd love to hear your feedback, (constructive) criticisms and progress. I hope you'll join me. If you have a great "after" picture, be sure to share it on Facebook!
The $5 Trick to End Clutter for Good!
What's the $5 trick, you ask?
No, it's not a $5 item at The Container Store (they don't have those there! ha ha). It's actually free....
Go into your nearest room.
Assign every item in there a $5 value.
Look around your room, counting by $5 for each item you see.
Pick yourself up off the floor after fainting once you realize how much all that stuff has cost you.
Let's just say it's probably safe to assume you could assign a $10 or $20 value to each item and still have it average out to less than you actually paid, but I didn't want to scare you that much.
Now, how does that end clutter?
Well, hopefully a few of you are saying "oh crap, that's where Suzie's college fund went!" and "WTF that would have paid for Paris." So basically, I hope you will immediately stop buying things that don't actually make you happy.
But, even if it makes you pause, just for a minute, before adding that next Adult Coloring Book or Chanel purse to the mix, then that's a start.
Create a list of purchases you KNOW make you happy. For me it's tealight candles, fresh flowers and a 1 hour foot massage. When the urge to splurge hits, at least get your dopamine rush from something that you won't regret.
What if doing something well weren't the point?
What if doing it because it brought you joy, was, in fact, the point.
Lately I've been thinking back to how many times I've tried, or not tried, something because I knew I would either be good at it, or I would be terrible at it....
While lately I've had paralysis around writing and painting, two attempts from the past also come come to mind. My attempt at snowboarding and my attempt at DJing.
Here's the thing, I was so bad at snowboarding that first year, that when I went to my annual checkup, the doctor asked me if I wanted to talk about it. "Sweetheart, do you want to talk about it? Is....is he....beating you?".....

Well, it's officially the start of the holiday season, though some intrepid retailers had Christmas decorations for sale a few weeks ago. Geez.
So, after you've taken the family out for some good ol' fashioned trick or treating, wiped off the last of the glitter and makeup and brewed a cup of tea, join me for a few tricks to make your holidays a treat.
1. Gratitude 🙌 ❤️ 🙏...
I know a lot of us have trouble getting rid of clothing that we "paid good money for" because it "might be worth something".
To put things in perspective, a shirt and pants worn by Audrey Freakin' Hepburn are only expected to grab $125 at auction.
So....moral of the story, you may just be money and time ahead by donating those bell bottoms. 👗👠👕👖👚👛
Before buying more stuff....or more bins to organize said stuff, maybe just tell yourself "I love you.".
Powerful....thank you Danielle LaPorte
