Hello folks,
It's been 5 years now since the disaster began. A lot of health safety issues have been resolved through the hard work of scientists, activists, and political leaders. Some safety issues remain the same. I left this page in place as a reference for those English speakers living in or visiting Japan. I was debating removing it as there is plenty of reputable current data and I have no more to add to the conversation but decided to leave things be. I know I le...arned a lot through the conversations on the many topics we covered in the threads here and figure maybe some other folks can still use some layman's nuclear safety discussion in their decision making. I will be changing the format to be some-what more of an archive from this point forward as I have not made a relevant post in some time and usually the feed is used as a means to get a more alarmist message out by others. I won't be removing posts, just not adding any in the future.
The many risks of the modern world make living anywhere complicated, but some simple safeguards can usually reduce one's risks in life significantly. Stay safe everybody. The worst of the risk for exposure to Fukushima Dai Ichi related radio-nuclide contamination through the food chain has begun to subside 5-years-on because of the implementation of good testing apparati and rate of bio-accumulation vs time.
The plant is still contaminating the surrounding seawater so there is still a need to be vigilant but most of us have made our decisions on how to cope with it all by now.
We are currently living far from Japan in a place with risks all its own and take precautions here accordingly. We plan to return to Japan and still believe it to be one of the healthiest and safest places to live on the planet.
