Starting on 18 February 2000, and lasting until April of that year, the United States Air Force took part in Operations ATLAS RESPONSE and SILENT PROMISE, humanitarian relief efforts in response to heavy flooding in Mozambique and South Africa. All told US aircraft flew nearly 600 sorties, executing aerial surveillance of the damage, delivering more than 1000 tons of cargo, and logging over 800 flight hours. The team's efforts provided food, water, and medical supplies to more than 650,000 people. #partnerships #legacy (courtesy photo)

16 February 1932 saw the first flight of the Martin B-10, the first monoplane, all metal bomber in regular use by the United States Air Force's forerunner, the United States Army Air Corps. Due to its size relative to its contemporaries, the B-10 was nicknamed "the Flying Whale," but it was the fastest bomber of its day and could even outrun America's fastest pursuit planes. There is never a bad time to remember the life and legacy of General Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr., the first African-American to reach the rank of (4-Star) General in the United States Air Force, but Feburary seems especially appropriate as General James was both born in (11 Feb 1920) and passed away in (25 Feb 1978) the month.

General James learned to fly at the famed Tuskegee institute and, after serving as a trainer for pilots in World War Two, saw combat as a fighter pilo...t in both the Korean War (101 combat missions) and the Vietnam War (78 combat missions). He served in posts in England, the Philippines, Thailand, and Libya in addition to postings across the US, achieving the rank of General upon assuming command of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) and, with it, operational responsibility for "all aspects of the air defense of the United States and Canada." #BlackHistoryMonth #USAF

Last week 'Final Approach,' one of the unit's rock bands, had the opportunity to perform at the Akebono Special Needs School in Nisaraki City in Yamanashi Prefecture. Playing music for, and interacting with, these resilient young people was a moving experience which the team will not soon forget.

One of the truly wonderful aspects of being stationed at Yokota Air Base is interacting with counterparts from Allied and Partner Nations from throughout the Asia-Indo-Pacific region. This multinational comradery is exemplified by the United Nations Command (Rear), headquartered right here at Yokota. Last week, the Band of the Pacific's brass quintet, Pacific Brass, provided ceremonial support for an event which saw a General from the United States Army preside over the transition of command of the organization from one Royal Australian Air Force Group Captain to another, all while being narrated by the Command's Vice-Commander, a Major from the Royal Canadian Air Force. #partnerships

Yokota Air Base was once again privileged to host one our nation's senior leaders as the Vice President of the United States gave a troop talk to a crowd comprised of United States Airmen and our Koku Jieitai partners (Japan Air Self Defense Forces). The Band of the Pacific was honored to provide musical support as Pacific Trends entertained the troops before the VP's speech. The visits to Yokota by so many of our senior leaders over the past few months underscores the importance of, and our Nation's commitment to, our alliance with Japan. Each February, the North Kanto Defense Bureau presents an afternoon of performances sharing Japanese and American culture and celebrating the bond between Yokota Air Base and the communities of western Tokyo. One of the highlights of this event is the tradition of the USAF Band of the Pacific joining in performance with the hosting community's local wind ensemble; over the past weekend the band enjoyed making music and spending time with with friends in the Mushashimurayama W...ind Ensemble.

An enjoyable, and vital, part of the outreach mission for the members of the USAF Band of the Pacific is to share in the culture of the people throughout the Asia-Indo-Pacific region. Earlier this week, the Pacific Saxophone Quartet performed at the International Exchange Festival in Higashiyamato, Tokyo; this special event included demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts from throughout the region; as a special treat, the group received an introduction to the intricacies of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Every Airman's service story is different; the 374 Airlift Wing Public Affairs team recently asked Senior Airman Alycia Cancel, one of the USAF Band of the Pacific's outstanding vocalists, to share hers:

Silence spread throughout the room as all eyes were focused on her. She performed in front of people before, but this time, it was different.Senior Airman Alycia Cancel, U.S. Air Force band of

The AC-130 gunships are a devastating display of force and firepower. Through the years the gunships have been equipped with an array of side-fired canons, howitzers, mini-guns, wing mounted missiles and bombs and laser-guided missiles launched from the rear cargo door, earning the moniker the “Angel of Death.” The primary missions of the gunships are close air support, air interdiction, and armed reconnaissance.
