Meet Chester - our March 'Braveheart' of the Month!
Chester is a 14 week old mischievous Springer Spaniel puppy who is interested in everything. Unfortunately, Chester's mischievousness led him into a life threatening condition...
Chester's owners knew all was not well when he started vomiting and began straining to go to the toilet. He also lost his appetite and was painful in his tummy....
This was not normal behaviour for Chester so they brought him straight to our Meole Brace practice. Radiographs (x-rays) revealed that he had multiple stones stuck in his intestines which were so large that they were causing a blockage.
Veterinary surgeon Jonathan and veterinary nurse Kristina stayed up late into the night to perform a risky and life saving procedure known as an exploratory laparotomy. This involves surgery to remove the foreign body from the intestines. If Chester had not undergone this operation, it is very likely that his guts could have ruptured, contaminating his abdomen and causing a fatal condition called peritonitis.
Luckily, all FIVE stones were retrieved and Chester is well on his way to a full recovery! Isn't he adorable?
We hope he has learned his lesson and won't be eating any more stones any time soon!!
