We know that per the ACA insurances are required to allow us one "wellness" visit a year that does not have a copay, coinsurance and/or deductible with it. The confusion comes with what exactly is a "wellness" visit. First off the "wellness" visit is not a physical. The National Institutes of health describe that visit like this:

The purpose of the Annual Wellness Visit is to develop or update your personalized prevention plan. The visit includes:
• A health risk assessm...ent (questions you answer about your health)
• A review of your medical and family history
• Developing or updating a list of your current providers and prescriptions
• Documenting your height, weight, blood pressure and other routine measurements
• Looking for signs of memory loss or dementia
• Personalized health advice just for you
• A list of risk factors and treatment options for you
• A screening schedule (like a checklist) for the preventive services recommended for you.
You can see that there is no real physical exam connected with a wellness visit. It is mostly conversation about your health. It is not a discussion about specific illnesses that you already deal with. Those visits do require a copay, coinsurance and/or deductible. Of course if you schedule your wellness exam and you do have an issue with a current illness that you want to focus on instead we can change that visit from wellness to an office visit and then reschedule your wellness exam.

A Physical Exam does have copay, coinsurance and/or deductible with it and can be described as: a head-to-toe assessment of health. You may expect ordering of tests, screenings, X-rays and other procedures. It usually includes:
• Documenting your height, weight, blood pressure and other routine measurements
• Looking at the body (inspection)
• Feeling the body with fingers or hands (palpation)
• Listening to the body’s sounds (auscultation)
• Producing sounds, usually by tapping on areas of the body (percussion)

We know it indeed can be confusing but we are here to answer questions if we can.
