Night Of Free Healthcare For Trans Patients
Equal Access Clinic Hosts Trans Health Night Oct. 29

The University of Florida’s free health clinic will cater specifically to trans patients on Oct. 29, as part of a Trans Health Night for culturally sensitive, equitable healthcare treatment.

Trans Health Night will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Equal Access Main Street, one of a network of student-run free clinics at UF. It is presented by HealthQueer Alliance, an LGBTQ interest group for students in the health sciences.

Trans individuals will be the only patients accepted to the clinic this night.

The goal is to ensure patients’ safety and comfort, and to provide a setting where trans individuals can rest assured their healthcare provider will be familiar with and sensitive to specific trans health needs.

“The doctor’s office actually has the potential to be an unhealthy place for trans individuals. Stepping foot in a waiting room, it can be hard for trans patients to know that they will find a welcoming, culturally sensitive environment,” HealthQueer Alliance President Ansley Schulte said. “We wanted a place for trans people to know that it’s a safe space to receive healthcare, and to be open with their providers.

Both preventative and acute care will be provided. Patients can come in for a cold, a pelvic or rectal exam, birth control or anything else.

Trans Health Night is the culminating event of Trans Health Month, a series of workshops and lectures to educate health science professionals and students on trans health. HealthQueer Alliance is presenting Trans Health Month to increase healthcare providers’ cultural competency with trans populations.
