ATTORNEY JOEL A. BRODSKY GETS CLIENT'S 1991 WRONGFUL CONVICTION AND ...LIFE SENTENCE OVERTURNED
I took on the case of People v. James Gibson six (6) years ago, after he had exhausted every possible appeal. Jim had been sentenced to life in prison in 1991 for a double murder. He had been locked up since December 31, 1989. It was an incriminating statement made under torture by disgraced Lt. Detective Jon Burge and Detectives working under him. I get a lot of letter from prisoners, but there was something about the letter from Jim that made me take notice. I looked into this case and decided to take it on.
We applied to Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission (TIRC) which approved our application to the Circuit Court. TIRC had the power to get the entire defense file and, importantly, the entire states attorney file. What I found there was shocking. I found photo's proving the torture (which I had confirmed by a forensic pathologist), as well as documents showing that Jim had been in two (2) previously undisclosed lineups where he was NOT identified as being involved in the murders. These lineups were hidden for 25 years. Then we got assigned to the most pro-state judge in the County. However, I was determined that I would make a full record so that everything was laid out for the appellate court if we were denied relief by the circuit judge. When the circuit judge denied us relief we appealed. I wrote a brief 100 pages long (I had to get special permission to file a brief double the allowed size of 50 pages), and the appellate court reversed and sent the case back to the circuit judge, instructing her to take another look at the evidence. The circuit judge denied Jim relief again, and we appealed again. This time the appellate court had enough and threw out James Gibson's conviction for a double murder he did not commit, and removed the circuit court judge from the case.
This proves that its not what happens that defines us, but how we keep fighting and moving forward despite what happens that determines who we are. To all those that may think that they have gotten me, or my clients, (you know who you are) think again. Turn around and you will see me coming. I never give up.

R. Kelly doesn't have a chance. R. Kelly's lawyer is Steve "Ineffect...ive Assistance" Greenberg, who was found to be such an ineffective lawyer in 2016 that they had to give his client a new trial based on Steve Greenberg's "ineffective assistance of counsel".
