Suspected Coronavirus (COVID-19) case tests negative in Zimbabwe: te...sts done at National Microbiology Reference Lab (Sally Mugabe Hospital) The Ministry of Health and Child Care would like to safely confirm that the reported suspected COVID-19 case in Zimbabwe has been ruled out as negative and Zimbabwe is still coronavirus free. This case confirms the effectiveness of Zimbabwe's surveillance system in dealing with COVID-19. The traveler was identified through our surveillance system at Robert Gabriel International airport having noted that she had been to the epicenter of this Corona virus outbreak in Wuhan. In order to protect our nation the candidate had to be isolated immediately . "To me this shows that our system is working well and is a sign of good preparedness. As we indicated before our laboratory testing for Corona virus is also fully functional and our scientists have managed to test the traveller and confirmed her to be negative for Corona virus (covid19) as the authorities in China had also confirmed. "So we can still guarantee the nation that there is no Corona virus in Zimbabwe. We will however as per protocol continue to monitor this candidate for the 21 day prescribed period," said Dr. O. Moyo. Our protocol continues to be stringent and protective of our nation and to further strengthen our surveillance,we are now following a scientific approach requiring all travellers coming from China to be screened and quarantined for 14 days in China and if they are found to be safe they will be issued with a clearance certificate to travel. When they come to Zimbabwe, they will still be subjected to a further 21 day self quarantine. Case management training of trainers has started at Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital and a total of 70 healthcare workers were trained (17 doctors, 19 nurses, 6 laboratorians, 2 health promotion officers 3 surveillance officers ,and 3 environmental health officers) and shown the set up, flow of staff and suspected patients within the isolation facility in order to better plan the cascade training and establish isolation facilities in their institutions . These came from all over the country including private institutions. We will continue to educate our population through the media and Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials. See More

Procedures for Corona virus (COVID-19) screening at Zimbabwean Ports... of Entry Upon arrival at the border post, the tourist or citizen is screened by port health, checking the body temperature. If the temperature is 38 degrees and above, the person is temporarily isolated whilst further investigations are done to establish the underlying cause. When the person shows that he/she is coming from a COVID-19 affected country, they then fill in their personal details on a prescribed travelers’ form. The form shows details of movement and where they are going, physical address and mobile numbers of the person visited. The information is dispatched to the province or town of the tourist or visitor where health workers will make follow ups for 21 days. The follow ups follow prescribed formats and feedback is given on progress to authorities at different levels up to the Permanent Secretary. We account for all visitors even if the visit lasts one day. See More
