London today has been pretty similar, thick fog rolling down from Richmond Hill over Kew gardens by the River Thames. I remember talking to my grandfather about the great smogs of 1948 and 1952, he had to walk all the way home from work in the city centre, not even the buses could run. Coal dust particles from home fires making huge water droplets were the culprit...
