This election year in particular, many Muslims say they feel like they've become pawns in a political game. Candidates score points by blaming them for violence perpetrated by other people.

...Standing by the Islamic Center on 12th Avenue South, I finally stumble upon patriotism, a dose of the old red, white and blue, a reason to celebrate America, to, for a moment at least, swell with Yankee Doodle pride in this savage summer of slaughter.

- Tennessee Muslims appalled by Florida shootings, condemn targeted vi...olence and hate (NASHVILLE, TN June 12, 2016) The Tennessee Muslim community condemns this morning’s attack on a Gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This horrific act of targeted violence claimed the lives of fifty people and injured fifty-three more, making it the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The shooter has been identified as Omar S. Mateen. At this time the motive(s) of this attack remain unclear. However, the shooter’s father stated on MSNBC “that his son became very angry after seeing two men kissing in Miami months ago” and there are reports that Mateen had expressed support for the terrorist organization Daesh, also known as ISIS or ISIL. “We cannot allow mass murders, terrorists or the voices of hate to turn Americans against one another,” said Paul Galloway Executive Director of the American Muslim Advisory Council. “What is needed right now is a focus on healing, prayer, and the deepening of relationships across lines that too often divide us.” The Tennessee Muslim community joins with our neighbors and all people of goodwill as we pray for the victims, their families and all of their loved ones. We also pray for and thank the first responders and law enforcement professionals whose duty it was to respond to this terrible attack for their lifesaving service. The American Muslim Advisory Council is a 501c3 tax exempt organization. Our mission is to foster mutual trust and respect among all people through civic engagement, community building and media relations in order to protect all Tennesseans from prejudice and targeted violence.
