Here's my latest column - it reflects on a powerful new book, "Until... We Reckon," which urges us to rethink our approach to violence if we are to end mass incarceration and give survivors what they need and want most to overcome trauma. Although we've been told for decades that victims of violent crime want nothing more than to see those who harmed them incarcerated, fully 90 percent of victims in NYC who are given the opportunity to participate in a restorative justice program decide that they would rather participate in that program than send the person who harmed them to prison. They know that our criminal injustice system cannot give them what they need to heal. And they also know that prisons do not keep them safe in the long run; in fact, it's more likely that people who are incarcerated will pose an even greater threat after experiencing the violence of prison. A recent national survey of survivors found that victims of violence are even more supportive of alternatives to incarceration than the general public. Programs like Common Justice prove what our politicians have long denied -- there are meaningful alternatives to prison, even for many crimes of violence. See More
