Since Hanukkah is almost here, I'd love to share a custom followed by many Italian Jews. To light the Hanukkah lamp, we recycle the same candle that we used in the summer for reading Eichah (Lamentations) by candlelight on Tisha b'Av. That candle was brought home and put away until now. While on Tisha B’Av we mourn the destruction of the Temple, on Hanukkah we celebrate its rededication, and using the same candle is a reminder that after deep sorrows things can get better. Wishing all of you lots of light, love, and... latkas!
