FLAC was delighted to attend the Law Reform Commission's Annual Conference in Dublin Castle today. Chief Justice Frank Clarke delivered an insightful keynote address followed by an engaging session by Dearbhail McDonald and Senator Michael McDowell.
Our CEO Eilis Barry made proposals for potential areas of reform in the final session of the day. We look forward to working on a more detailed submission and working with the Law Reform Commission to help further Access To Justice.

The CEO of the Free Legal Advice Centre (Flac), Eilis Barry, told the Irish Independent it would support the move. She said it would "increase access to justice" for people but would have to be backed up with funding for legal aid supports.

Local authority tenants have welcomed a landmark decision by the European Committee of Social Rights which has found against the Irish Government for its failur...e to ensure the right to housing of an adequate standard for families living in local authority housing estates across Ireland.
The decision is a result of a collective complaint, the evidence for which was gathered over five years through the work of Community Action Network working with tenants from 20 local communities, closely supported by The Centre for Housing Law, Right and Policy at NUI Galway and Ballymun Community Law Centre. It was lodged in 2014 against Ireland on behalf of local tenants by FIDH - International Federation for Human Rights with the support of affiliate member FLAC - the Free Legal Advice Centres along with PILA.
FLAC CEO Eilis Barry would like to welcome the decision of the Chief Justice to allow cameras into the Supreme Court for the first time.
"We had previously welcomed his commitment to access to justice. This decision will help demystify the process and the more people that get an opportunity to see what happens in court the better, it will bring a better understanding and knowledge about what goes on in the court to a wider audience and improve access to justice".
