Fire Safety Tip: “Turning on the Heater for the First Time This Fall”
As the temperatures start to drop, many folks will be cranking up the heat for the first time in months. That burning smell when you flip the switch? Don’t panic!
That “fire-like” odor usually comes from your heater burning off the dust that’s built up since last winter. It can be a little alarming, but it’s typically not an emergency. You might want to crack a few windows to help clear the smell. If the od...or fades away and you don’t see any other signs of fire, there’s no need to call 911.
However, if you see smoke or flames along with that burning smell, immediately turn off the system, get everyone out of the home, and call 911.
Before you turn on your heater for the season, it’s a good idea to have it serviced by a licensed heating or cooling contractor to make sure everything is clean, safe, and running smoothly.

Incident Type: Motor Vehicle Crash
Units from the Midway Fire District were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash involving a red sedan that failed to negotiate a sharp curve while traveling westbound. The vehicle left the roadway, breached a chain-link fence, and came to rest partially submerged in a retention pond.
...The driver self-extricated prior to the arrival of first responders and fled the scene. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a search of the surrounding area with negative results. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded and assumed investigative responsibility. Note-there was a similar crash at this location, back on August 30, 2025.
🚒 Truck 36 showed up in style!
The Midway Fire District’s Truck 36 made a big appearance at the Cool Rides at Coastline event this weekend.
There wasn’t a category for “Largest Truck,” but that didn’t stop folks from checking it out and meeting the crew. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello. We had a blast showing off the big rig!
