DR. PIERANGELI G. VITAL
University Researcher

Dr. Vital is born into a Kapampangan family and raised in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. Dr. Pierangeli G. Vital or Dr. Pie has more than 10 years of experience performing research and teaching in the field of environmental microbiology. She is currently University Researcher, Head of the Biological Research and Services Laboratory, and Scientist 1 in the Scientific Career System of the Department of Science and Technology and Civil Service Commission (DOST-CSC) at the Natural Sciences Research Institute in the University of the Philippines Diliman. She served as ASEAN Science and Technology Fellow in 2019/20 (under the ASEAN Foundation and USAID) and Senior Scientist Research Fellow in 2017 (under the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research). In recognition of her research achievements and her continued effort to promote and strengthen the discipline of environmental microbiology, she received the following distinctions: Diplomate of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology, 2020 Outstanding ASEAN Science Diplomat, Young Ambassador of the Year from International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), Ambassador for the Environment Award from the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc., and Special Citation in the NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists.

Dr. Pie pioneered the investigation of microbial safety of agricultural products by studying the microbiological quality of fresh produce from Philippine markets. Her research work also includes beneficial microbes such as probiotics, probabilistic modeling of endophytic fungi, and microalgal biodiversity and renewable energy. Beyond the borders of the laboratory, Dr. Pie currently serves professional organizations as ISME Young Ambassador of the Philippines, Business Manager of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc., Treasurer of the Philippine Phycological Society, Inc., and Corresponding Secretary of the Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society, Alpha Chi Chapter.

DR. REY DONNE S. PAPA
Dean of College of Science
University ...of Santo Tomas

Dr. Papa is a specialist in freshwater zooplankton ecology and systematics. He has published more than 65 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, three book chapters, edited two books and one textbook to date. His scientific outputs have guided efforts of the national government on the conservation and management of major lakes and other freshwater ecosystems in the Philippines.

Dr. Papa is a limnologist who finished his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science (cum Laude) and Ph.D. (cum Laude) degrees at the University of Santo Tomas.

At present, he holds administrative positions in the University of Santo Tomas such as Dean of the UST College of Science, Program Lead for Natural Sciences at the UST Graduate School, and Editor-in-Chief of The Antoninus Journal. He teaches Zoology and Ecology courses to graduate and undergraduate students and established the Zooplankton Ecology, Systematics and Limnology (ZESL) Research Group of the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.
