Today, we will be featuring another one of the nine (9) 2023 Outstanding Young Scientists:
Albert Remus R. Rosana
Ph.D. Microbiology and Biotechnology
Universit...y of the Philippines Los Baños
Dr. Albert Remus R. Rosana is recognized for his achievements in the fields of microbial biotechnology and natural products chemistry; for his research outputs on novel genomics-driven drug discovery and development in the Philippines in collaboration with Filipino scientists, and for his inventive research in combating an epidemic of mountain pine beetle utilizing pheromone pathway engineering in entomopathogenic fungi.
Dr. Rosana is the Science and Technology Fellow of the Tuklas Lunas® or the Philippines’ National Drug Discovery and Development program of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology. His expertise in molecular microbiology and natural products chemistry is also being strategically applied to contribute to the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP), where he leads the project Viral Biobanking of vector-borne viruses such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis.
Dr. Rosana obtained his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (magna cum laude) from the University of the Los Baños in 2005, his Master of Science in Microbiology and Biotechnology, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 2013, and 2022, respectively.

Today, we will be featuring one of the nine (9) 2023 Outstanding Young Scientists:
Nonawin Lucob-Agustin
Ph.D. Agricultural Sciences
Philippine Rice Research In...stitute
Dr. Nonawin Lucob-Agustin is an agricultural scientist specializing in bioengineering science. She is recognized for her substantial contributions to identifying genetic variables and mechanisms that regulate L-type lateral root development. Such roots are beneficial to rice's stable growth, adaptability, and productivity in abiotically challenged situations. The identified mutant genes (weg1, plr1, Osmed25) that promote substantially developed root systems with no adverse consequences on aerial portions are presented for the first time. The mutants can be used as parent materials for genetic improvement and breeding of rice.
Dr. Agustin is currently a Project Officer V and a long-term balik-scientist at Philippine Rice Research Institute, where she is co-leading three (3) projects: 1) Molecular Mechanisms of Root System Formation for Genetic Improvement of Rice Adapted to Water Stress Conditions (PCAARRD-funded), 2) Advanced Biotechnology Tools for Improving Rice Abiotic Stress Tolerance (Rice Biotechnology Program-funded) and, 3) Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Root System Formation and their Application to Rice Breeding (BSP-funded).
Dr. Agustin obtained her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, her Master of Science, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Science from Nagoya University, Japan. In the same university, she completed the five-year Women Leaders Program to promote Well-being in Asia under the Program for Leading Graduate Schools and MEXT, Japan, and recently served as a Visiting Lecturer/ Researcher at the International Center for Research and Education in Agriculture.
